@nnyz depending on what you're trying to record...the headphone socket should be good enough to record into. If you have an Apple headphone set with the 3.5 mm plug instead of the lightning plug it might be worth giving that a trial. I've used this for vocals before and it seemed to work quite well for my needs at the time.
**There is no way to use IDAM and the camera adapter kit so put that one to sleep. ** The adapter kit does not transfer data over the lightning adapter socket. This is purely a power connection only.
You can get adapter cables that you can plug microphone cables and the like into.
Here's a YouTube clip on the type of adapter plug you need for the iPad end.
There is another company that creates these with an xlr adapters built in as well.
The only caveat is that this kind of connection is not going to supply power to a phantom powered mic.
You might find it easier to try out the built in mic first, depending on what you're wanting to record it might just give you what you need.
thanks man!
I'll try those...
I seem to be having more luck with IDAM than I do with the camera adapter kit so I'll stick to that I reckon. I won't be using the mic that much....just seemed a shame that I have an audiofuse with all these lovely ins and outs and I can't use them! .....oh well, still works for my needs over IDAM
@arktek what kind of setup do you use?
@nnyz, you should be able to use the audiofuse with the iPad as long as it's not connected to the Mac via iDAM. Have you considered just unplugging the iPad from the Mac for the period of time that you need to use it? Once you've got the audio recorded you can switch back over to IDAM.
A bit of a hassle, but it seems like a lot less to go through and a better end result than these other workarounds.
You are free to try. You will find other threads here where > @nnyz said:
What problems do you have with the CCK?
yeah I was just hoping to ask around to find a hassle free way. having tried again that method does work with the adapter and shows the fuse in aum...might resort to that.....or find a cheaper second interface for the ipad, then connect the audio out to the fuse...and midi connect them to sync? maybe thats just over complicating things
having retied the cck I'm not having problems with it....guess I wasn't aware of not being able to use my audiofuse with the ipad AND my mac daw at the same time. IDAM is good enough for me....but I may want to occaissionaly record a mic into Gauss or something. could transfer a file but I was hoping to do it on the fly...or just quicker than that.....internal mic again good enough I guess but I got plenty of good mics ready to go!
maybe audio transfer will be a later update for IDAM?
hoping so!
When you are using Gauss, are you using it i a situation where it needs to be connected to the Mac? You can use your interface direct with the iPad -- you just can't use it with the Mac and iPad at the same time.
yeah I could just switch....was hoping to find a hassle free solution but I don't think one exists!
AirDrop is so quick and easy for transferring files I don’t even bother with IDAM 99% of the time.
@nnyz as it happens I currently have an AudioFuse as my audio interface. It works a treat with the iPad (that was my main reason for getting it at the time). I wanted an interface which was flexible, had a few channels and potential for expansion with the ADAT ins and outs. It's mic pre amps have enough gain to drive my Shure sm7b as well...so, a few wins over all. It has been plug and play right from the start.
I also have a MacBook Pro which I run Logic and Bitwig. I have Studio One, Reaper, Live Lite and MixBus as well, but don't spend much time in those after getting Logic. Most of those have been acquired over the years when bouncing between OS X, Windows and Linux. I still like Reaper, but only so many hours in a day.....
I have had no issues running the AudioFuse directly through the CCK and with the 3 USB ports I have been able to have my keyboards plugged in as well as an external drive for file storage. (just gave myself an idea...)
All of the DAWs on the iPad see the in and outs (they see all the ADATs as well) - I have BM3, Cubasis and Auria Pro for most of my audio uses. Yes, I do swap around a bit between these 3 depending on where my inspiration goes. Drambo is almost at a point where I might spend more time there too.
AUM or BM3 are the main ones I use when connected via IDAM. I can setup synths and sound ideas from here and stream them into the Mac. Bitwig runs Ableton Link so I can sync directly with AUM and BM3 enough to get what I need playing. Would be nice to have Auria and Cubasis be better play pals with others, but there are plenty of options. I can use Audiobus too when inspired especially when I want to sync MIDI with Logic as the Master. BM3 is pretty good with this too. I have experimented with Ableton Link over Ethernet and that works well too, I have two USB hubs with Ethernet so, one wire and it's all good when I don't want to be externally networked to WiFi and the like.
I find that just Air Dropping files between the devices or using the Files app directly and/or with the external storage has been the most time efficient way to move audio files between the iPad and the Mac. I use IDAM when I'm in the mood for a little experimentation that involves bringing in an iOS synth or Drum Machine. Also If I have something on the Pad I need to tweak live. After using the iPad for audio over the last few years I find some of the apps on the Pad faster to use if I have an idea brewing so that's an IDAM moment.
Anyway, at this stage the way I share that interface is by physically swapping the interface between the Mac the iPad. For most setups this has been fine. My plan is to have a second interface with ADATs In and Outs so that I can have an 8 channel direct connection between the 2 devices - for FX potentials and for more directly connected synths. I'm thinking at this stage it might be the RME Babyface Pro because I can link MIDI directly between the two interfaces then and having something new, shiny and different is always nice.
It never occurred to me until just now that I might be able to use that headphone out as a second stereo out while connected via IDAM. So, in theory two stereo channels out of the pad to the Mac using the Audiofuse for the Analog component. Always something new breaking through.
That was a bit of a ramble, but if you have any questions regarding any of this feel free to ask them.
dont mind the ramble....great info thanks!
Wow @arktek That was very informative!
