@SimonSomeone Found the kick to snare patch in Impaktor and I see how it’s accomplished. I will do some experimenting in Drambo to see if I can get it to work. Basically it has a low sine wave for kick on one layer and noise on another layer and the input volume level modulates a mix knob.
@hypnopad Hi, yeh I was about to reply. I thought initially it was responding to the frequency of the input, but it's just volume. Thanks for taking a look at it!
With this type of synthesis it can be both/either.
Just took a look and have no idea how you would do that in Drambo. It’s so easy and intuitive in Impaktor. Will have to consult the experts. This is actually something I want to know how to do for myself.
yeh, I feel like impaktor is actually synthesising the sound, using the audio to trigger it, and the timbre of the audio to influence that synthesis. All the other methods and apps seem to be using resonators etc to modify the existing audio, which is quite a different outcome. I wish Impaktor could be an AU with audio input, or even just IAA with audio input.
For triggering, I would try two FAC Envolvers. One for the snare and one for the hat. Each generates a MIDI note with velocity and MIDI CC. Send each of those to a different synth. Ruismaker FM, Ruismaker Noir, auGEN X, SeekBeats... Drambo.
The tricky part as someone mentioned is separating the snare from the hat. I suspect you can dial it in if you add a different EQ before each Envolver so that for example, strumming on a low string strikes the snare and a higher string hits the hat.
@SimonSomeone Ok. I think I have your solution. Open Impaktor. Then open Audiobus (2 or 3) and put Impaktor in the INPUT slot. Not the fx slot. You will get a prompt to restart in the icon. Tap it. A window will pop up. Tap “switch to Impaktor” .You’re good to go. I haven’t run it in awhile and forgot how I had it routed. Yesterday I was trying to run it in the fx slot like I run Drambo fx and it didn’t work since it’s an IAA. You don’t need Drambo. Now you can add some cool effects in the fx slot.
I am pretty sure that Impaktor is using the mic input as an impulse and applying various processes (like resonators and filters, etc) to it rather than synthesizing sound. That is why it is so responsive and accurate in its dynamics.
Whoa, thanks! I'll give that a try.
Also, in the meantime I was having a further play with Objeq and somehow thought I'd try it with Koala FX. I got some instantly interesting results. Here's a video. Still pretty rough and needs tweaking, but I like the kind of sounds. Starting with dry guitar, adding amp sim, Koala, Objeq and Rough Rider 3. Koala makes the biggest difference.
@SimonSomeone The sine wave and noise settings I believe are oscillators but they are a small part of the whole. Overall it is a physical modeling synth but you can combine the two types.@espiegel123 is right. Impaktor receives impulses and resonates them through models. It just does this better than most.
EDIT- I corrected my earlier claim the sine and noise modules were models.
Cool video. We do have quite a candy store to explore in iOS.
Hmmm, I still don't see how to get my guitar audio directly from an interface, not the mic, in there. I have Impaktor in the Input slot, but don't see any options for routing audio through there. But I'm not very experienced with AB so I might be missing something...
What kind of interface are you using? It worked with both an IRig interface plugged into the headphone jack and a Focusrite interface plugged into the lightning port via a CCK. I did notice I sometimes had to leave the Impaktor screen in the beginning. Once I was on the main audiobus screen audio started working. That will work if you see Impaktor levels moving but are hearing no sound.
edit. You don’t need to route anything else. It should just work. With the exception of the bug I just mentioned.
Looks like my old M-Audio Fasttrack doesn't work with AB. It works fine with AUM which is interesting. I can pipe audio into AB from AUM by choosing it as an output, But Impaktor doesn't respond. I tried loading it on the same node AUM was occupying to no avail. So I doubt the interface is class compliant. It's pretty old.
Interesting that AUM has no issues with it. Tried it in AB a few times in different ways with restarts etc. Never mind, I can still make interesting noises...
That’s too bad. Good luck with the other toys.
@mojozart You don't need Envolver when you have everything inside Drambo, not only the envelope follower but also the peaking EQ module that can be set to extremes (high Q and high gain) that allows for some pitch detection (say, to detect picks on two different open strings) and control all kinds of sound and PM parameters.
Or send MIDI notes and CCs.
I've used that a few times and it works quite well.
Hmm, does this mean you could set it up to differentiate between some low, mid and high notes (doesn't matter to me if it's not precise), map these to midi notes and send to an internal drum synth module? How about to an external AU?
Yes, both. As long as the tones are clearly audible and not the same note on a different octave, that should work well enough. To trigger an external AU, you would use the MIDI Note generator module.
If your interface works with AUM then it must be class compliant.
I wonder if you cannot select it as a system audio input in AB3?
@rs2000 ... actually, yep there it is! Maybe reconnecting it helped. I was able to select it as an input in the first slot, which wasn't an option before. Hypnopad said that audio should just feed into Impaktor if it's in the first slot. But I can't select my Audio interface if Impator's in there, and vice versa.
Maybe I'll have another play. I'm not sure what's meant to happen if I have 2 things on the first slot, the audio input and Impaktor. I did try that earlier with no success but for whatever reason I don't think AB swas seeing my interface at that time.
Tbh, I had too many issues using Impaktor in DAWs so I stopped wasting my time.
Yonac's Roxsyn guitar synth has everything that should be needed: envelope follower, noise generator, and filter.
Perhaps a Roxsyn user in this forum can "chime" in.
