Bismarck BS-16i On Sale. Is it still needed?

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the BS-16, the company has put it on sale for $3.99, but a lot has changed over this time, most notably the introduction of the SoundFonts app, which performs the main advertised function of the BS-16 “SoundFont / DLS Sample Player.”

Does the base app have a synth engine as well? The app description shows two IAPs for a “Hi-ResSynthesizer Engine“ ($4.99) and 128 Polyphony ($2.99). Are these also on sale?

If one were to purchase the base app would you have a low res synth engine or none at all? 😒

That doesn’t seem appealing to me.

Also the app reviews don’t seem that great as well: 3.8.

Was disappointed they didn’t also put their left-handed keyboard on sale. Me and my lefty posse would have loved that!

If you use sound font it can be very usefull. I went for soundFonts the app instead.

Sounfonts app is ok but Bs16 is another level...real control over the fonts/presets 16 part multitimbral old school rompler. takes time to set up tho.. worth it.
umm never used the IAP in bs16.. 64 voices enuff and hires? whats hires engine anyway :# go
    vanilla no diffrence.
note; it plays midifiles just fine, using bs16 built in 16 channels mixer realtime is kinda fun

  • Do one need the iAPs to get most out of the Soundfonts?

  • say cheesy

  • I've always considered Bismark an essential workhorse. I guess some users didn't like the iCloud integration?

  • It has always been an essential for me. I would have happily paid twice the regular price.

  • On the iPad it's essential on the Mac I just import the SF2's into Logic's Sampler...
(The conversion process makes it easier to dig out individual samples too which I can then use with other apps).

  • It’s blue.

    For those who asked

The high quality sound engine in Bs-16i makes a difference, particularly for quiet passages or subtle playing. With the standard engine I can notice at the tail of many sounds (when the volume decreases and is near silence) some kind of noise, like low resolution samples, similar to the typical effect of mp3s at quiet moments (mp3 for classic or jazz is just intolerable for me).
It dissapeared when I activated the high quality engine.

    From this post https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/27124/bs-16i-iaps
But I recall someone else in another discussion saying more about the engine IAP

  • I don’t use it as much as I used to because I upgraded my iPad and can finally use Pure Platinum Synth Pro but I used it a lot for bread and butter sounds on my Air2 because it has a lot of useful sounds and it ran great on my Air2, it wasn’t hard on the CPU

  • I think the title isn't true, I'm sure I've bought it on sale 5 or more years ago 🤔

  • its great on older devices, the midifile playback is good and retro

Yup. Someone mentioned it was first sale ever on the sales thread and I didn't double-check it. My apologies. Thank you for pointing that out.

  • Five years is a long time to go without a sale.

Well, considering current COVID circumstances, six months ago seems like a lifetime! 😉

Most time that is too much for me. I prefer simpler SoundFonts app for that reason.

BS-16i is my go to app for performance sounds. I have a collection of soundfonts that rival most the expensive apps like Module and the piano apps and best of all they are completely free.
    https://sites.google.com/site/soundfonts4u/
I have tried other soundfont players and found they have problems with latency or handling complex soundfonts.

  • I believe it was me because I saw this on appagg.com and never checked appsliced.com to compare.

  • Disk streaming ?

Perhaps, but you are totally forgiven, @Poppadocrock!

As a life-long journalist, I should have known to make sure every fact reported has at least two independent sources.

Considering all the awesome contributions you have made to the forum, it's certainly a minuscule mistake in an otherwise stellar fourum record! 😊

  • It’s as lovely as the sound fonts you use in it. With something like a 350mb instrument, the tweakabity of parameters on offer really satisfy.
And there’s a golden retriever on the splash page

    No.

    From the App Store description:

    • To load the specified soundfont / DLS file, the device have to ready free memory larger that file size of it.
  • Is this app only compatible with sf2 files? I’ve tried sfzs sfarks and sfpacks and can’t even get them to save to the bs-16i folder... the sfz I can drag there but it doesn’t show up in the app...

  • SF2 only which is what the app description says upfront.

Cheers, I’ve just been back to the App Store page and can only see that it says ‘loads Soundfont and DLS’. It does refer to sf2 in a different sentence and context that doesn’t seem to imply exclusivity...

No beef, I just presumed from the generic ‘soundfont’ that it’d include common formats :)

ps I managed to convert a SFZ to a SF2 using this

    https://www.polyphone-soundfonts.com/

Not found something for the sfpack / sfark ones I've got yet but there's probably tools for that too.

BS-16i has a ton of presets built in too, a lot of sounds for four notes :)

In case anyone wants these same sounds for the SoundFonts app (or anything else), they’re from here:
    http://www.schristiancollins.com/generaluser.php

This is the one: (only 28.6 MB)
    http://www.schristiancollins.com/soundfonts/GeneralUser_GS_1.44-SoftSynth.zip

  • One of the good things about BS is there are tons of SF2 files online and some unusual ones if you’re looking for something different. I find it worth having as much as any other synth. Just a different approach.

  • It’s been my longtime soundfont workhorse.
I have so many loaded into it.

I use the newer SoundFonts app as an acoustic piano player exclusively. I currently have the Chateau Studio Piano and a Bisendorfer 1890 (yeah, I know it’s not the one used at Trident, but a boy can’t have everything) loaded into it.
