Shimmer is so overdone at this point that i avoid it at all costs. Its become redundant for me.
Thanks Doug! Tuning in now. Looking forward to hearing your comparison and opinion! Many shimmers have come out this year!
Quality video and playing as usual Doug.
Seems I backed the right horses with the two I bought. Thanks for doing this comparison though as it is really useful to hear the differences.
Was thinking the other day how you had been a bit absent round these parts. Hope you are coping well with the lockdown, must be difficult times with your health issues..
Amen. It took me like 30 seconds to get sick of it in the first place. I don’t get the fascination. More of a one-trick pony, you can get away with using this on a single track, or maybe sparsely 2-3 times throughout an album, then you have to retire it. I cringe whenever I hear it anymore.
Well that’s no fun for anyone who has just purchased 5 of them!! 😂
Haha. Hey, go nuts with them in private, just you only get one release to use it and I’ll probably turn off as soon as I hear it!
It really is a one-trick pony and i have noticed almost zero difference between each one. I have Alteza and TB reverb but i avoid the shimmer settings. Reverb is super handy in small doses in general if overused it just simply ruins a mix.
@Bill_Brasky @oat_phipps Curious what your preferred music tastes are to see if your disdain for the effect is related. I love big reverbs and don't ever get sick of the sound although acknowledge that it can be overused and I have way too many shimmer apps now...
If Eventide had come out first instead of last then I might have saved a lot of money although I do think FAC Alteza is something special and all of them are good.
I really like octave up shimmer if the reverb is really dark and the pitched up frequencies are trying to make up for the filtered out frequencies. Like 4:40 in this song:
5th up and octave down reverbs tho......
Switch on the shimmer and smile at your speakers to make your teeth whiter.
It isnt a subtle effect, it will dominate a track and and many cases it takes over an entire mix. It has become the go-to for many synth jams i see on YT now and often as @oat_phipps says I also cringe and turn it off. I would say many synth players don’t know how to utilize reverb, it’s often way too much and it drowns out the mix.
Shimmer Reverb isnt a bad effect really its the overuse of it and its the lack of subtlety i hear in others music. When tons Developers are suddenly creating shimmer plugins you know that you are going to hear a lot of it coming down the pipe. There is a place for it but if it is used on every other thing you make its going to get really old.
I listen to a lot of ambient, techno, jazz and hip hop. From Carbon Based Lifeforms to Basic Channel to Charlie Parker and Wu Tang. There are big reverbs in some of the ambient music i listen to but the artists know where to use them and how to use them, even a big reverb can be subtle and still make a big impression.
All fair points. It does seem to be quite the popular app recently but I guess I haven't encountered it in the wild too much yet.
Also, I do love some Carbon Based Lifeforms!
I like the concept and have 4 pkts, but don’t see how you can use it in a project that has additional synths or instruments going at the same time.
I’ve used it on the very last note of a piece, @LinearLineman . That solves that problem!
But now I’m annoyed that I’ve used up the only time I’m supposed to use shimmer - on a single note.
i love shimmer, sounds great to me... saying it’s over used and cringey imo is like saying guitar strings are over used. you can make anything sound original with a Creative mind and fair use... sure some people use it to hide their lack of talent just like some hiphop makers use the stutter effect way to much on the sp404 to fill in for a lack of song structure but others use it right... but if people like it and they are making music i’m happy with it.
i def feel like shimmer is one of those effects for people who like it but it can also be mixed in just right to fit any genre.
blackhole is my go to reverb, it’s not a shimmer per say but it can get big and remain subtle
