A cheap alternative to Expressive E Touché?

Inspired by the wonderful work of @hypnopad and at the same time shocked by the retail price of an Expressive E Touché, I wondered for a while how a cheaper alternative could look like.
There are several ideas on how to build such a mechanism but while discussing MIDI control protocols for Drambo and Groove Rider, I remembered that the Arturia Beatstep sends polyphonic aftertouch messages.

Now the Touché basically sends absolute MIDI CC data from pressure four different directions: Upper, lower, left and right.

My Idea:
Why not put a massive square of heavy wood or steel on four pads, shape the bottom so it fits the pads and won't slip away and then calculate the respective CC messages from reading the aftertouch messages from the four different pads.
I have tried that with an old square-shaped copper CPU cooler and the pressure sensitivity of the four pads seems to be in a rather workable range!
If the weight of the square block is chosen to match, this could be a rather expressive and sensitive hack.

I'm sure our Mozaic experts would be able to write such a converter 😃😎

The fun thing would be that if this works, you could have two of these "DIY Touchés" for example and still have 8 pads and 16 encoders left for other uses.

Let's build our own Touché 😅

    1. Sure, I could write Mozaic code.

  • @rs2000 Just to let you know, I’m using the SE model that’s $230. USB only. You pay the extra $170 for din midi out and CV output. If you’ve got cool hardware synths or a modular system it’s a different story.
Good luck with your DYI project!

    Thanks.
If the SE had Bluetooth and battery power that would be a different story but since I wanted to add these to my Beatstep anyway... 😉

  • A joystick? Wouldn't be the same as the Touche - but gives you the basis of a four axis controller to work some coding magic with... could even use the death-ray buttons ... wheee!

  • A joy stick seems like the closest emulation as long as it’s spring loaded to snap back to center. That’s very important. I think a spring is critical to any design.

Does your idea require the BeatStep? It's $110 and USB only. Will the aftertouch be responsive enough.

I guess your prototyping but want some Mozaic help. Let's see if one of the Mozaic specialists raises their hand. This could require some skills and a access to a BeatStep and your prototype block of wood/metal with pad contact legs. It could happen.

I have a little joy stick on my cheap Akai Professional MPK Mini MKII that might also be an option. It's just one aspect of the Akai's set of inputs. It's a USB device too:

I bought it with the intention of making a Mozaic script to map it's knobs for my scripts.
But I haven't started yet. I was also hoping to get more involved in writing for this specific
device since it has a lot of cool controls and costs $110. It's painfully cheap though but I didn't want to spend more than that to start.

  • Thanks @McD and @hypnopad,
the point is to have a pressure sensitive controller like the Touché - or, to revive vintage memories, the french Ondes Martenot:

I already have a MIDI joystick, it works but it feels much less intuitive.

The beatstep already has 16 pressure sensitive pads, the only missing link is a script that converts pressure messages from multiple pads to Touché-like CC messages.

Bryan Appel has written a Mozaic script that does the job for one pad, this is certainly something to start with:
    https://patchstorage.com/aftertouch-to-cc/

I have also checked the "Streambyter university" but I cannot even find the cryptic code for Aftertouch/Poly Pressure messages 😅

I'd like to stay with the Beatstep because I really like its pad pressure responsiveness.

  • @rs2000 Quite a coincidence. Just downloaded this Mozaic script a week ago to convert aftertouch messages from my Sensel Morph into continuous controller messages for use in AUM/Undulator.
