Multiband Haas Effect by Mani Consulting Limited Company

https://apps.apple.com/app/id1526429747

Description:

Haas effect is a micro-delay applied to either the left or right channel of audio (but not both). This simple effect creates a realistic and natural-sounding increase in the width of the stereo field that still sounds good when mixed back to mono. It is the most simple and effective way to take a mono input and make it sound like stereo. But Haas effect has some problems. First, it can create phase cancellation problems in the bass frequencies, causing them to loose volume. Second, it can sound a bit artificial at high frequencies. This multi-band Haas effect plugin is a simple way to get the stereo width you need in the midrange frequencies without loosing the impact of the bass or making the treble sound phasey. You select any number from one to four bands, each with its own separate Haas delay setting and adjustable crossover frequencies. This makes mono audio sound wide and spacious while preserving the original tone and spectrum transparently.

  • @Blue_Mangoo just bought after testing it with TestFlight.

Thanks so much for letting us try the apps before buying.

    I love this effect.

  • If you want to try before you buy, download the beta for free on testflight: https://testflight.apple.com/join/dO2r5dix

The testflight build will be active for the next two weeks and then we will take it down.

I often use your excellent "Stereo Width" app. What is different with this app?

I often use your excellent "Stereo Width" app. What is different with this app?

Stereo width uses Mid / Side processing, adjusting the volume of the Side channel to increase or decrease the width of a stereo signal. When used on a mono signal (or a two channel signal where both channels are the same), the stereo width control doesn't do anything useful; the input must be stereo in order for it to work.

This new plugin is different. It takes an input signal which can be mono and makes it sound stereo. You could use the two plugins together, with the Haas effect placed before the stereo width control in the signal chain. The Haas effect stereoizes a mono input and the width control fine tunes the width of the output.

AN alternative explanation is that Haas effect makes mono signals stereo and is not very useful on stereo signals. Stereo width is most often used for taking the bass frequencies of a stereo signal and converting them back to mono or narrowing them down. So the two apps are almost opposites in terms functionality.

    also:
    1. Download the beta from testflight (see link above) if you're curious to try before you buy.
    2. Listen to the demos in the last 5 minutes of the video (above) to hear what Haas effect does to a mono input, and keep in mind that the stereo width control couldn't do that at all because it only works if there's some difference between the L and R channels, in other words, if there's something in the Side channel when it converts to Mid / Side.

  • Perfect, thanks for the explanation

  • Nice and simple.

Glad to hear the scope thing is coming out tomorrow as well.

It was... but a wise friend convinced me to wait until next week. A new app release can get stressful because I will have to contact many people and be on social media more than usual. That wears out an introvert personality like me. So I think it best For my own sanity if I do not to release two apps back to back on two consecutive days.

  • Since changing the Lag Time produces an audio artifact I had to see if I could put LFO's on Bands 2 and 3.
I used Rozeta LFO and it's another great use case for this app to further create a swirling disorienting sound scape.

The stereo image is also further impacted by the addition of the "Wider" FX app and it also can be stimulated with an LFO.

Rozeta gives you coordination features for 3 LFO's so you can make them sync or oppose each other in timings or use the sample and hold option and make the image changes more random.

Interesting. I know I can count on you to find an unexpected use for every one of my plugins. :)

Being able to add an LFO doubles the sales around here. These guys love tweaking knobs and making them dance rhythmically. Getting an audio artifact is another plus. But I'm sure someone will complain
and want that "fixed" because they use it for pristine "live" work and it was unprofessional.

    Ok, understood.

Quick question: was there a reason that you didn't also include volume based panning per frequency band?

Interesting idea... I didn’t think of it. The free stereo lag plugin that we have is very popular and our plan was simply to make a multiband version of it. No one ever asked for a pan control on the stereo lag so it did not occur to us to put one on this plugin. I agree that such a thing would make sense, but I have not yet tried it to see what it sounds like. Maybe we’ll do that in version 2. ;)

Or maybe we should make a multiband pan control. I’ve never seen one of those before.

Just occurred to me that something fling past your head would also have some change in volume on each ear.

The issue with doing several multi-band plugins is that you have to keep splitting tthe signal and putting it back together. Alternatively you could make a multi-band splitter that had an output for each band. Then the musician can assign whatever effect they like for each band.

  • Yes. We will consider it. Thank you.

Don't take any of that as criticism of this plugin. Have bought it and am enjoying the elegant interface, which is no mean feat to pull off in itself.

I already have a couple of apps by Blue Mangoo and it's always 5 stars quality so I'm very interrested in this Haas effect. I watched the video on YouTube and I learned that this app might be the one I'm looking for to fine tune my sound.

Is there presets with the app? When you play guitar with 8 or 9 effects it's nice to have good presets to save you some time and just play guitar and not tweaking parameters for 2 hours and call it a day after.

I think I also want the reverb and the attack softener. Gain Stage Clean is probably my favorite amp sim on iOS.

    Thanks!

Bought it years ago and never managed to get it to work as advertised, so I completely forgot about trying to use it.
