Volume levels in cubasis

I was wondering how everyone uses the volume levels on their tracks in cubasis.
At the moment I have 6 seperate tracks loaded. The master channel is set to 0 and then I play around with the volume on each track.
Is there an advantage to setting the master channel to minus whatever and then having each tracks fader At higher Volume or is 0 on the master ok?
I hope ive explained that right!

  • @Small_paul1976 I recently had a mix sounding just right but it clipped the master channel right at the end of the track. Usually I’d take each track down by 1dB, which is really fiddly in Cubasis2. This time I thought ‘sod it’ and I knocked the master down a tiny amount instead. Didn’t clip and the mix sounded ace. I’m no professional and it might not the the correct thing to do but it sounded good.

    Thanks for the reply mate.
I see all videos and comments about minus 6 on mixdown etc and have no clue what im doing with mastering.
Im just playing by ear and hoping for the best!

  • @Small_paul1976 Aye, I think the minus 6 is allowing headroom for when it gets mastered but I just have Tonebooters eq, enhancer and barricade in my master channel inserts. If anyone ever wanted to master anything I’d made I could just go back to the project, remove the TB effects and mix it lower. As it stands I just want my mixes to be as strong as poss and if it doesn’t clip then that’s ok by me. I’m really happy to learn from anyone else on the forum though, always wanna learn...

  • It's ok if individual tracks are peaking and clipping but the Master channel should never clip
