I'm thinking to buy a KeyStep Pro...

I didn't really consider buying it so far, because I'm rather a linear DAW guy and I found HW sequencing a bit awkward.

When I just fiddling around on my keyboard and my iPad I used get some musical ideas. However in that blessed moment :) starting cubasis or BM3, setting up the tracks, instrument(s), effects again, or just loading Atom piano roll into AUM and then continuously switching between the AU instances simply kills my inspiration.

I watched several videos on Keystep Pro recently and started thinking that it can eliminate this hassle and make the creation process much more fluid, fun.
Of course my expectation is not to replace Cubasis, rather to be able to get from a simple idea to something more serious that worth further elaborating in Cubasis. Or just have fun.

Guys, who have Keystep Pro with iPad, would you share you experiences?

  • (How) can you sync the tempo in AUM with the Keystep pro?
  • Can you save your patterns, scenes to your iPad somehow? (I know on PC and Mac it can be done)
  • (How) can you load your scenes into Cubasis for example?
  • Can you power it by an external battery? power bank? (manual does not recommend it)

  • I want one too. Also check out sl mkiii and the opz. All great at getting ideas down quickly.

  • I can’t answer all of your questions, but I will answer some. I am using my KeyStep pro with a 12” iPad Pro. It can power the KSP, no issues. I have saved sessions in AUM with all the necessary midi maps for my synth setups in AUM.

I love sequencing apps in AUM with OP_Z. No interface required

  • I've seen a couple of review videos which show an issue when using it as a MIDI looper. It seems to miss the first note or two that you play on the first pass of the loop, then records all the notes you play afterwards.

    Was this issue fixed?

@Lil_Stu07, Thanks, I saw it, Doug's video is great

@ion677, Yes, I considered the Novation SL MK3 as well, however it seems a bit big for what I want to use it. I already have a 76 keys synth that I use as master keyboard as well. The reason why I tend to prefer the Keystep pro is the mobility.

OP-Z and OP-1 are something I don't understand. I saw some videos, they sound great, but I wouldn't give more than $100 for them :) They are bloody expensive.
It reminds me my first "synthesizer" got from my brother when I was 10 :)

I think this gift was the reason why I fell in love with synthesizers for my entire life :)

@ShaneG, You surprised me with that the iPad pro can power the keystep pro! My I iPad Air 3 couldn't power the Komplete Kontrol M32 which is a much more simple keyboard.
I know that sessions can be saved in AUM, but how can you transfer the projects created in Keystep Pro to a DAW? And can you save the Keystep Pro projects to your iPad? If I'm right there are only 16 projects can be stored in the Keystep Pro

Personally, I’m waiting for the inevitable black edition Keystep pro.

You can edit and save, import the projects in the midi app that comes with the Keystep, same one used to update firmware and what not.

An iPad with a KSP isn’t exactly the holy grail. The promo’s make the KSP look ideal, but it isn’t.
Although it is a good pretty good tool and fun to work with, there are plenty flaws.
The current firmware is 1.3.7 and does contain some bugs and lacks functionality. The Arturia forum mod claims v2.0 will solve that.

Anyway, my current setup is build round an UMC1820 and acts as midi and audio hub. The KSP controls the synths and drums, where the iPad with Cubasis 3 records the audio.

Another nice setup would be to connect the KSP over BT and use AudioBus or AUM with soft synths on an iPad.

  • I’m gonna pick one up when the black one comes out this summer.

  • @MarcelX I like your setup! Finally I got a KSP for xmas. We are just getting know each other ;) So far it’s fun. It’s definitely good for putting together quick ideas in AUM and this is what I wanted to use it for primarily.

  • Loving my new KSP so far; It’s very quick and easy to pick up workflow.

So far I’m just using it to sequence Virus TI2 and a few other random hw synths and drum machines. I’ll be diving into more of a hybrid setup once I get everything configured with IC Midi4+ later.

I’m also considering grabbing a Blokas Midihub so I can do more interesting things with midi, like sending KSP’s drum track notes to separate midi channels (I.e. to a Virus multi with drum hits programmed on the first few channels) .. It’ll also be nice as an extra midi merge/thru box so I don’t have to do everything through Midi4+
