creating phrase samples to arrange in koala - quick video added

latley i’ve been making audio phrases and sequences in AUM with all the tools i dig just like normal, midifx/ audio fx/ and then i am just recording the output into enso and segments to basically make them samples.
segments is a great sample preparation step before moving on the next part...

rather than trying to make the whole song arrangement in AUM which gets complicated to keep track of , especially if you take time away from the project, i’ve been arranging the phrases into scenes by using koala.

i had an sp404 for a long time and always loved the resample technique to build up parts, and it’s proving to be very effective with koala as well, koala also has a much better sequencer than any of the SPs imo although i did enjoy the 505s sequencer a bit, and by recording into the koala sequencer where you can still adjust the levels before resampling to a pad has great results.

this resampling technique does require a good amount of preparation to make sure the samples are just how you want them with effects, volume levels , and all the color you want beforehand since you can’t do as much with them once resampled, but i’ve been getting results and ideas i simply couldn’t make happen with live arrangement alone. segments has been very helpful in the preparation steps.

maybe this will be helpful to others who are having a harder time finishing songs outside of a daw and im also interested to hear if anyone else has been using this technique.

i think a lot of people look at koala as just a sampler for making hiphop beats but i encourage you to think of it as an open canvas for any type of music. i do mostly ambient/down tempo music and really feel this is helping my workflow tremendously and removing the sequencing limitations i found myself running into with aum alone. (not blaming aum it’s really just my skills level at fault here lol)
i don’t really like to arrange in a daw timeline so when i do use a daw i prefer zenbeats clip launching but still it is a struggle to do everything in zenbeats to create the clips using midi alone, so my next step is to keep creating in this method and take samples i’ve mangled from koala /segments and arrange them in the zenbeats clip launcher rather than mixing everything into a big resampled chunk alone.

also koala is not an auv3 but hopefully it will be someday, in the meantime you can open it over AUM as a floating window , and that allows much faster workflow then the traditional iaa , for me it does “crash” , not totally it just starts buzzing and wont stop but when it does this you can still press save and then close and reopen without losing your progress.

UPDATE: quick video added before i do a more detailed one

to add , you can sample directly into koala but i prefer to sample into segments to save the sample easier and manipulate more , also with koala being iaa only it’s not as seemless, but if everything is already how you want it then skip this step and sample strait into koala 😏

i’ve also been making pretty long parts as samples, like verse 1 - all on one pad , verse 2 all on one pad and then resampling other sounds over it from another pad to build upon the verse. i love the live playing and instant recording as opposed to having to time it all out with midi

  • i love resampling! just did an hour long session with an arp/pad progression.
maybe i’ll do a quick live youtube from scratch with this method

Cool. Be good to see your process.

  • This is gold @reasOne

    Love the bounce-render-commit workflows.

Yeah I’d love to see your process as well.

ok i’m going to try to make a video in the morning after work! ya..i work nights ugh lol.

i think i can fly thru the process in 15/20 minutes explaining all the steps without any extra fluff!
as long as i can get the mic levels and everything right it should be no problemo

and def @Proppa i feel like doing this causes me stop tweaking and changing stuff and just commit to it and move on!

  • I've been doing this with Koala too since I got it recently. I wish there was a way to edit the sequences a bit better though.

  • Awesome writing, mate
I can totally relate. My SP gathered dust for a long time. Never felt the boom-bap workflow you see all around. Used it more for the effects and sound design.
But lately I have been recording into each pad, mess with the sounds and commit, treating it like a multitracker. So much better, and being more productive

Gotta try that with Koala too now

ya unfortunately the sequence editing is very limited, the only thing you can really do is overdub , but that’s pretty true to how the 404 is and i think it’s modeled heavy after that... which is why most 404 users ignore the sequencer and resample, i’ve been only putting my final piece of what i’ve resampled into the sequencer.. but ok with you i would love to be able to jump into the sequencer and get more detailed

def! it can be much more than a boom bap only tool and with koala you get a better sample rate for a less gritty sound... you can choose to add grit or keep it clean. it’s pretty much how i use it.. to track out parts and combine down with resampling parts on top each other

  • i wont get the video done this morning..i was having issues with my ipad this morning and lost my creative flow... but def going to this week !

  • This flow sounds intriguing. I'd love so see a vid if you can find the time @reasOne.

it’s fun! i’m hoping to get one up today

  • Great stuff. Koala is so inspiring. Been using it to loop phrases from nanoloop

  • so here’s a quick snippet of some of the methods i’ve been doing.
trying to arrange all this via midi and loopers etc in aum would have taken forever , this is so fast and i can avoid the daw, which i prefer when i’m trying to be in the creative brain state. the daw is good later but for getting in the zone , for me this is where it’s at!

longer video coming soon, time permits if there is interest. video added to og post as well

  • Awesome! Thanks so much

  • Great, thanks for that, I for one would be interested to see a longer video.

  • Thanks for sharing @reasOne . To confirm, is this the flow?

Record phrases into Koala pads one at a time via IAA
Combine said phrases in Koala via resampling?

no problem! hope it’ll inspire a little creativity!

great! i have fun doing these so i’ll make one covering the whole process

pretty much! however i have been known to pull up a few keyboards in aum and record a couple synth riffs simultaneously, like a pad and arp or even a few synths all wired to one keyboard to get several voices into one pad.
also i do edits and reshaping in koala to those samples to see what kind a weird stuff will come out
