OT: Longer length YT videos with Ads. Unable / harder to “pre-skip” ads? 🧐

Hope the thread title makes sense, lol.

Recently I noticed that longer YouTub videos, especially compilations, will have ads “hidden” in the middle that pop up unexpectedly EVEN IF I do the “refresh the page” trick, which normally eliminates all ads from YT videos.

But... so far I think MAYBE (until YT catches on and has all resistance eliminated) refreshing / reloading the page about 4 or 5 times SEEMS to help so far.

It’s inconvenient. But so is listening to a mellow bunch of songs while about to fall asleep and hearing “TRY DOREETOS NEW BUBBLE GUM RANCH FLAVOR CHIPS! OHHH YEAAAA!!!” 😵🤪

Or am I hallucinating again? (Please convince me that i am. It’s so much more peaceful. 😛)

  • I gave up and ended up paying for premium. It was worth it for me.

I won’t do it, i tells ya! It’s like paying for internet porn, or fresh air or something! It’s a natural human right. Where’s my torch and pitchfork? 🤪 (just kidding)

Thanks for the reply. How much is premium, if you recall?

  • I have never heard of any "refresh page" trick before! Must try. My biggest annoyance with YT ads is when airplaying to a TV. Often the ad breaks the airplay connection. In best case scenario, the airplay playback stutters but resumes play after the ad.

I'm paying for family premium which is like around £20 a month. I know it sounds a lot but for me and my family it's well worth it. We watch a lot of YouTube.

  • If you're using Firefox, there's a plugin which kllls ads and does a few other cool things: https://www.mrfdev.com/enhancer-for-youtube

  • I pay for Premium which is great. I knew within minutes there was no going back,

☺️ Good! Glad to hear it’s worth it for you. A day without YT is like... a day without cheese, lol.

    Very tempting...

👍 Thanks! Will check it out. I seem to keep turning off my adblockers because they seem to sometimes (maybe?) block cookies. And we don’t wants that, now do we, Precious? 🤣

  • How does advertising work on YouTube? Does, say, someone who puts up a demo of an app, for instance , share part of the revenue from the ads?

  • I would just pay for premium, but I don't use it enough and I fear I'd become a junkie like I've seen so many others become due to feeling like I need to get my money's worth. I did enjoy that month long free trial however!

And i shall post reactions to your reactions. Profit! 🤑 Just call it a nuclear reaction wormhole, lol.

  • I just realized the thread title I made has the words “longer length” and “harder” in it, lol. It wasn’t meant to be clickbait, I swear! (Paging Dr. Freud... Dr. Freud, your slip is showing 😂)

  • Just use a good adblocker, I haven’t seen a Youtube ad in years (on either my PC or iPad)

  • On Firefox I use uBlock origin - no ads
On iOS and Mac OS, Wipr - no ads

I watch a semi popular YouTube channel and the guy was playing another clip to comment on when an ad came up. He could probably get 1 viewer to pay for his Premium If he asked, lol. I feel like it’s a ‘won’t be a sucker’ mentality. He can afford it.

I forget I have Premium a lot since I got it but can’t imagine fooling around with all that anymore. No ads on Apple TV or anywhere I watch YouTube ever. I watch yt way too much but at least it’s to learn or improve skills half the time.

  • YouTube Premium is a bit pricey. But let me put this out there. Someone asked whether creators get a cut of the ad revenue. They do, if their channel is big enough, if it has over 1000 subs. How much they get depends on how big they are. So if you are enjoying and finding benefit from people like Jake, Dean and Doug's youtube channels, and many others who have over a thousand, which now also includes Daveypoo, then just watch the ads if you don't want to pay for premium.

Nobody would think it good if someone came in here and shared a hack that meant that a dev got less income from their app making. But finding ways to avoid watching ads is exactly the equivalent of that. I don't like YouTube ads either - well, some are useful, but in general they're a pain. But it's only a few seconds of inconvenience and I tolerate it because I know that at least some of that money is going to the person who took the time to learn their stuff and make a video to share it with others.

You’re assumption about content creators not getting paid from Premium subscriber views sounded funny and super unfair to me so i just checked-

    From Youtube FAQ:

“In fact, YouTube Premium gives a secondary revenue stream for creators in addition to what you're already earning today through ads. ... Currently, new revenue from YouTube Premium membership fees is distributed to video creators based on how much members watch your content.”

We’re in total agreement then, it looks like you misunderstood my post @maxwellhouser
I didn’t say they don’t get paid from premium - of course they would! That’s a misunderstanding. I said ‘watch the ads if you don’t want to pay for premium’. I wasn’t saying don’t get premium. I was saying, don’t use ad blockers. 🙏. Getting premium is a great thing to do if you can afford it and I salute you for doing so.

Oh I definitely see that now! My bad, I’m sorry! ...😐

  • No worries! These things happen

  • I asked and you’ve answered my question, thanks

premium is the way to go, once you experience it you’ll never go back. plus you get youtube music app subscribe as well . 22$ family plan for 6 people to use

  • There’s an app Called “Tube Browser - Ad Blocker“ that’s $2.99 it goes on sale for free semi regularly. This might help.
