Sharing projects between iOS and MacOS? Multi platform synths? Audio tracks? Which solutions exist?

I recently got into Zenbeats and I like it a lot. It's surely not the most feature rich DAW on the planet but its fun to use and easily gets my creative flow going. As you might know Zenbeats is multi platform (iOS, Android, Windows and MacOS) and it is very easy to share songs even across platforms. You simply hit the share button when both instances are running - no files hassle. You just get everything transferred.

The sharing is so easy that I'm tempted to jam around on the iPad and continue on a big screen. The Zenbeats synths are quite basic, maybe except Sample Verse... BUT I have a huge investment into AUv3s on my iPad and there are so many synths that I love. Shockwave, Sunrizer, Factory, etc. etc. So I'm looking into options how to continue work on a Mac AND use these synths.

1) Multi-platform synths. There are some synths that exist on iOS and MacOS. Sugar Bytes has quite a number. Well sometimes iOS versions have less voices but basically the same synth engine. But can I exchange patches? If I can do that, will they sound the same? Did anyone do that? Well, I'd be limited to the multi-platform synths then. BTW, do know which multi-platform synths and FX exists?

2) Using the iPad synths from my Mac. I could load all the synths that I use in the project into AUM, control them via MIDI and stream the audio back into Zenbeats on my Mac. Simplest option: IDAM with a USB cable. Better option: multi channel audio device. Using the iPad as a sound module. But then I would lose lots of features of Zenbeats like freezing/unfreezing tracks, simple one-click-saves-all save action.

3) Bouncing tracks to audio. Bounce and then share. That's kind of brute force. Looses almost all possibilities to work on the song. Not very much loved.

4) Syncing both Zenbeats with Ableton Link. Kind of combination of 1-3. Using the multi-platform synths on the Mac and the synths that are iOS only on the iPad. Muting tracks that are from the other device. Once I think an iOS synth track is final I can bounce it and transfer to the Mac. Problem is that Ableton Link can not sync the playhead position or loops, so bouncing must be done often. Editing requires working with both devices and possibly results in split brain.

There is the rumour that Roland will release Zenology to iOS. That would be a lot of synths. Then option #1 could be quite feasible.

#2 with a multi-channel audio device seems like the ideal solution IMO.

StudioMux might be an option for multi-channel audio, though I don't know how reliable it is, and it requires some unsupported workarounds to use it on Catalina.

  • Yeah, #2 has been the most tenable approach for me so far, but the lack of bidirectional audio via IDAM is such a baffling/frustrating oversight.
