Genesis lived according only to Genesis’ own lights, which took bravery and commitment. Apparently not always easy for others involved with Genesis as has been widely reported. Still and all, a true original.
I was a contemporary of the late Geoff Rushton, aka John Balance of Coil, at Sussex University in the 80s, and later interviewed him and Sleazy, and reported on Coil, Genesis’ Temple Ov Psychic Youth/Psychic TV etc during my time as a music journalist. The seeds of Genesis’ artistic inspirations spread far and wide through many musicians I admired greatly.
As it happens, I also made a few gender changes along my own progress through life, and I’d go along with some of the gender analysis on offer here. Less mysticism, more praxis, a different take on what creativity might mean in the context of performative gender, a deeper perspective which I personally found more immediately useful in what were some very confusing times for me.
