Pedal Steel App

Has anybody tried this one?

It has got no AB and I can't seem to find any further information about the app...

  • I emailed Dev about AB support. Will update here.

  • Thanks @mgmg4871! I've seen the tutorial now and I feel it should really be on the bus.

  • I've played it, it's not quite like playing the real thing. ;) Personally I prefer the thumb jam pedal steel sounds and using it's UI for vibrato.

Its a fine app, like it a lot.

  • I'm sorry, I had this confused with the one made by Yonac. That tutorial looks great though, might have to pick this one up if it ever hops on the bus.

  • Hey Guys! I'm the developer of Pedal Steel and I'm really glad to hear you are enjoying the app. Also thanks for the emails to let me know about this thread.

The audio engine used in Pedal Steel is OpenAL which was previously not supported by AudioBus. I'll do some research to see if that has changed in the recent AudioBus SDK changes. I'm also looking into the implementation of iOS 7's interaudio as a workable solution.

I'll post back here with any progress that is made. Thanks for writing.

    Thanks,
    Nick

  • Many thanks for responding. Very cool app.

@MadCalfApps, no AB still does not support engines using OpenAL. You'll probably want to consider rewriting your engine to use the RemoteIO AU style of audio processing, which will be compatible with integration with both IAA and AB. Possibly non-trivial, but totally worth it. If you start with A Tasty Pixel's The Amazing Audio Engine library ( http://theamazingaudioengine.com ), it will be probably be easier.

  • Its the sliding that will be (amongst other things) the trickier part to port to RemoteIO as its just a built in command on OpenAL. I'm pretty sure all OpenAL does it just speed the sample processing up and down and interpolate the new values, so it would be pretty straightforward to get the same effect doing this with RemoteIO. As @sonosaurus said, The Amazing Audio Engine would be a great way to go I think.

  • I thought I read a comment a while back that AAE was not suited to sample processing, but I could be completely wrong.

  • AAE does not have anything as high level as actually doing sample processing, but it does a great job of hiding all the code to configure the RemoteIO low level stuff. It is up to you to do the real work of the audio generation. There are some builtin AudioUnits in iOS that can also help, such as Sampler and 3D Mixer AUs.

  • Thanks for all the info guys. I'll definitely check out AAE.

@sonosaurus If you are interested, I'd be happy to send you the audio samples from my Pedal Steel app to include as a DLC sound bank in ThumbJam. My email is [email protected]

    Thanks,
    Nick

  • @sonosaurus and @madcalfapps, this kind of collaboration is a win for everyone. Thank you!

  • I've already emailed him ;)

  • Great! Nice to see how to see how things are developing here.

Hi! You should really check out AAE. I did exactly the same with my app, went from OpenAL to AAE. Because of the well written documentation you should be up and running in no time, including AB ;)

  • @sonosaurus What happened with the pedal steel soundbank in Thumbjam. Did this ever materialize?

Wow, just went back to the email archives to figure that out.... turns out the samples were recorded in a room with a resonating snare head which were impossible to filter out, so I didn't ever follow through with using them for anything.

Doh! That's too bad. I've found some posts in the forum archives stating that the "JR Smooth Steel" patch is a pedal steel, but I'm not hearing that at all. Sounds like a synth with a tape warble effect. What is that patch a recording of?

That is a custom patch Jordan Rudess sampled for me from one of his synths, but I think it is pretty evocative of a steel string something, and responds well to the slide/gliding mode in TJ.
