adaptor with USB AND audio out for iphone 8?

I have two lightning adaptors, one that will allow the USB connection and power for the iphone...I have another that allows audio and power. But what I NEED is one that will allow power and have the USB connection and mini-jack audio out as well.
Does anyone know of such a one? btw I tried using both of the adaptors in series to try and achieve this but all the phone said was it is an unsupported device :(

  • TO further explain why I need it...I have an Alesis Vortex that I want to use to play the iOS synths on the phone, now, I have an adaptor that allows me to connect the Vortex dongle and it works fine, BUT no sound, apart from the phone speaker...I have an adaptor that allows me to connect a mini-jack so I can get sound out to the desk, but then no way of inputting note data from the Vortex...hence the need for a device that does both...

  • Awkward problem. You can use the USB Lightning adapter with a USB hub and a USB DAC. There are lots of DACs, about the size of a memory stick. Kind of kludgey, but works.

I think the gotcha is that the audio means the lightning USB terminates in the adapter so the adapter would have to implement a USB hub to have an external USB port. Too tricky to engineer in a tiny integrated circuit that runs off of USB power and probably rather expensive since the market for the chip would be small... so you'd make the worlds most complex adapter that sells for $1,000.

    But I want one too.

Thanks, I'll look into that. I had read about DACs and the Android system a year or so back, but not for iOS.

    haha, yep - totally agree!

I've found devices like this https://au.grandado.com/products/newest-3-in-1-for-lightning-to-otg-usb-camera-adapter-with-charging-port-3-5mm-headphone-jack-for-iphone-ipad-ios-9-3-12?_pos=2&_sid=97959eff3&_ss=r

BUT, not sure if I can connect my lightning to USB to the Lightning port on it :( and indeed , if the iPhone would even "see" it!

  • One solution is to use the audio/power adaptor only and opt for bluetooth midi input. I was stuggling with the same conundrum and odered a cheap wireless midi adaptor for my keyboad. I was originally intending to get the Yamaha UD-BT01 USB Midi adaptor (or MD-BT01 if you want to use 5 pin Din midi) but this one is almost impossible to find so I've ordered a chineese knockoff for $30 from AliExpress called DoreMidi Wieless Bluetooth adaptor.

That lightning port is used to get power to the iPad. There are no active USB signals on the port. It would take a "master" hub in the adapter to relay those USB signals and there are no
circuits i the adapter to do that... just copper traces.

    (I've tried it.)

USB always has a "Master" and a "Slave". The connector type helps you plug the right end into the proper port.

    iPad = Master
Audio Interface = typically a "Slave" but iConnect makes a "smart device" that has software to make it act like a slave to multiple computers (iPad and Mac or PC).

Most USB Hubs just forward signals and allow you to aggregate slave devices to one master.
A Mac can serve multiple USB networks and forward data between them, I think.
It's the master on each USB network it connects to and is never a slave.

Can we get a less politically sensitive analogy soon? All devices are created equal but some
devices are more equal than others.

  • haha thanks McD (last line only - thanks for the rest) fwiw I found a neat (ish!) solution by using a 4 port USB hub and an Alesis Control Hub which I had forgotten about in a drawer hahaha! https://www.alesis.com/products/legacy/control-hub
