Stay Away from Apogee One if you Own a USB C iPad

edited September 2020 in General App Discussion

Good evening everyone.
Just a heads up.
For all those who own iPads with USBC port, please stay away from purchasing Apogee One (if you intended to use it with iPads).
It doesn’t work and Apogee seems to have no intentions (or difficult ) to produce an update.
This is their reply when i asked them if we could see an update soon.

  • I’m far too familiar with the struggle.

  • Here’s the bummer article from Apogee where it says the One is the least compatible with usbc... sorry

It highly depends on if the device is 'class compliant' (ie. requires no additional drivers) to function properly.

If/When I get a USB-C based iPad I'll be looking for a USB-B->USB-C cable for the UR-242 and/or a USB-C HUB with a few USB-A ports and additional USB-C + Charge ports. Need to be able to charge the damed thing while using it for audio :)

Still not out but likely worth the wait...

  • Nothing will work. No cord etc.

The apogee duet/one/quartet Are mfi devices. So specifically you’ll get audio to ‘play thru them’, but you cant control and change settings in the maestro App On a usb c iPad to turn on phantom power For mics etc.

Apogee Appears to have long since abandoned making these devices work with 2018-2020 iPad pros. It appears that the symphony desktop is supposed to fix that for iPad Pro users.

I wonder how those hubs actually work, when using the headphoneport simultaneously with powerdelivery and USB 3. Please post your comments about the real world (plug/unplug, choosable output between speaker/headphone and so on) usage (I‘ve found issues with more than one USB drive connected etc. and would be interested to buy a functioning device). Thank you, gentle people

Hi there, so basically, there is a slot for charging only (but strange thing is that, I plugged my usbc to 3.5 adapter to the usb c port on the hub and I could use it to listen to music and also with daws. when I connect it to my Mac, the iPad doesn’t show up, only charging). There is another hub similar to mine that also allow data transfer on usb c port.

My hub is always connected to the iPad and these is how it works :
    1. Hub connected to iPad, you can still hear music (sounds) from the ipads speakers.

    1. Connect headphones to the 3.5 slot, you only hear sound from the headphones ( the hub works like all mobile devices, sound from speakers is cut when you insert headphones).

    2. If you plug an audio interface, sound only comes from the audio interface and not the hubs 3.5 slot ( this is something that has to do with iOS, the iPad (idevices) only let you use the last connected interface.

    3. If I connect HDMI cable, i can only hear sound from the TV. Sound from TV is cut when I insert headphones into the hubs 3.5 headphones slot and can hear audio only from headphones.

    4. If I connect an audio interface while using hdmi slot, there is no audio from interface but only from TV or 3.5 headphones slot on hub.

    5. Connected usbc to 3.5 adapter to hubs usbc port, I can hear music from the adapter, but if I plug my headphones into the Hubs 3.5 audio from usbc adapter is cut.

In regards to usb drives, it’s all down to iOS, I have a drive that works on and off, while my other drive works without issues on the hub.
the sd card slot works as it should m I have a 16GB sd card inserted, i used it to create a GarageBand project directly working on the SD card without issues.
Hope I answered all you questions, if not feel free to ask 😊

That’s a lot of useful ports, that could work as an extra hub. I don’t like cables hanging of the ipads port 😊

  • @Paa89: wow, that‘s some detailed answer. Thank you very much. Most of the usb c hubs don‘t have a 3.5mm jack included, and I was wondering if there is a technical reason why. Usually I use an Interface for jamming, but I‘ll keep in mind what you have detailed about your experiences, very helpful! Cheers, t

I use this one with my iPad Pro 12.9 3rd Gen:
    https://www.caldigit.com/usb-c-pro-dock/

    Charges the iPad
Provides usb-c bus power and audio signal to / from my Motu M4 audio interface.
Drives a HP ZR30w 30” monitor via the DisplayPort out.

Works extremely well and doesn’t appear to add any noticeable audio latency.
Sometimes I have to cycle the Motu M4’s power on off and on to have it be active rather than the headphone connection on the CalDigit.

Oddly the rear USB ports didn’t power up the Motu M4 at first.
But after plugging in my iPhone to the rear ports once, from then on they provided power and audio to the Motu just fine.

I use this one with my 2020 iPad Pro and MOTU M2. Charges the iPad, prevents intermittent power issues with the MOTU. I don’t use the other port.

Sold my Apogee One and couldn’t be happier.
