Bass guitar slaps with Nembrini PSA1000 and Overloud bass amps

2020 is not just a banner year for pandemics and iOS guitarists, but also for slappin’ da BASS... Overloud TH-U has 5 bass amps and 3 bass cabs in the collection, as well as Bass Rigs Volume 1. Nembrini PSA1000 Sr/Jr is a bassist’s goldmine, and they may have an Ampeg amp on the horizon.

Here’s a quick demo in AUM, with my buttercream maple Fender P Bass plugged into an Apogee Jam plus.

• Nembrini PSA1000 “Loop Vitalizer” preset, or as I like to call it, “Dirty Sex”.

• Overloud Bass Rigs Vol. 1 “Long Solo” preset.

• Overloud Bass World preset bank “Classic Boost” preset.

Comments

  • The second track is really nice😉.

  • Yes. The "Bass Rigs" pack "Long Solo" sounds nice.
"Bass Regs Vol 1" costs $23 for 39 rigs.

I hope @Daveypoo joins in on the "TH-U Experience". It's an ITALIAN company, bro'.
Represent. He's pretty Nembrini'd right now and has been ApeSoft since they came down from the trees and started making tools.

@McD I've downloaded Overloud THU at least 3 times and deleted it without even opening it every time, only because I just haven't had the time or mental bandwidth to even try it out. I want to try that and the GE Labs one also, but with all the apps I've had to review lately I just haven't had time.

In regards to the bass amps - I'm a huge believer in recording bass direct with a dry a signal as possible and if I use an amp or preamp I tend to use my Genzler Magellan amp or Sadowsky preamp or both (mostly because I feel guilty that I have them so feel like I need to use them to justify the purchases, still, after all these years).

That being said, I HAVE used the PSA1000 with bass and it sounds wonderful, so I highly recommend that combo.

Thanks for checking in and validating PSA 1000 for bass. Important because it's ON SALE.

Totally agree recording bass direct is a great sound and template, and basses aren’t aided by IRs. The sound of the pure bass in AUM with just the interface and no di box and nothing on it is so good I wondered if I even needed amp sims. There’s something about the curvature of the bass frequency though that when you’re playing up the fretboard in the upper octave or using heavy attack it’s obvious there’s nothing on it. With one of those Aguilar bass rigs the 12th fret attains a really full liquid tone that’s not present just direct. The bass amps also can serve a specific sound, like funky enveloper and slapping eq, or the tone color of a specific amp. And the PSA1000 is just a game changing tool for me, driving and saturating bass and vocals and drums with amazing color reminiscent of my favorite recordings. Of course all these sounds are great for playing but could actually complicate or ruin a mix, so bass direct is a perfect method for tracking.

@Daveypoo So would you then add amps and preamps post? Makes sense for bass, but I can’t stand it for guitar, because the tone you shape informs the way you play and what you create.

  • I have noticed that loading just a bass amp and bass cab from scratch in Overloud sounds really muffled and bassy, and that most of the Bass presets that come with Overloud use the shelf splitter and mixer on either side of the cab, as well as the 4x10 OB Tweed ‘59 which is cab both for guitar and bass.

  • The SansAmp, on which the PSA1000 (Jr) is based, included 10 bass-specific presets as part of its factory patches.

Can’t wait to try these! Thank you for this!

@JoyceRoadStudios You certainly CAN add an amp and cab in post if you want, but I rarely do. I prefer a more direct bass tone overall than the tone of a recorded cab, either real or simulated. It's just a personal preference, though - there are lots of different bass tones and many ways to achieve them so go with what your ears tell you is right.

@Daveypoo my ears tell me that whatever amp sounds good and deep and wide playing solo bass grooves does not sit well in a mix at all. It all gets really lost and flabby. Definitely a dry direct bass tone sitting right in the middle of a mix works best, and I suppose mastering glue would be more than enough to enhance it. I do love the bite and saturation you get with the PSA1000 though, especially helpful if one doesn’t own a hardware pre. It also adds a certain studio honkyness reminiscent of great ‘90s records.
