RE-1 Tape Machine Sale, buy?
How is re-1 tape machine by Kai? On sale for $5, if I have the 2 free tape emulations, reelbus and daw cassette is it redundant?
Comments
Reelbus is not free!
I don't really like the interface of re-1, but the ability to do long delays means it can be usedtas a kind of looper, which is pretty cool. For tape fx, Reelbus seems to be the app to beat though.
I think he was referring to Tape Cassette 1& 2.
Oh yeah, I see now that I misunderstood!
It depends if you're looking for a more faithful recreation of tape (Reelbus, Tape Cassette) or a delay with tape character (RE-1, K7D, Tap Delay). I really like it though Kai's UIs tend to have problems with scaling. Note that it actually has syncable looper setting if that's a deciding factor.
It actually has a looper up to 8 bars. This has the stretch and link transport. But again it's all what you're looking for. Seems pretty cool alternative.
Thanks all, I also have k7d and TTap and simple delay so it’s clear that what I have is a problem. My name is Young Plátano and I am an addict. Thanks for the honest review, I think I can safely pass. I still need tonality and chordbot so I’ll put the funds toward those.
Hi everyone, new here 🙂 I really dig RE-1 and use it constantly. Please help : how do I record the output from a session with this machine - not just write a loop or a preset? I just bought audiobus 3 and it does not appear to recognize or “see” RE-1. Rather than using it as a plug in, how do I record direct output, all on my iOS phone?
Thanks and cheers!
Chris
Hi again!
Also, if I’m playing around with a pre-loaded loop that I imported, in the RE-1, can I manipúlate said loop and still have the input mic engaged for recording input in real time? This doesn’t appear to function for me. Using iPhone mic only, in addition to the loop that is processing.
Thanks!
Have you put it in the effects slot?
Nope. It is my only track and I’m trying to Inter route it to Audio share app. No fox. Thanks
Oh... ok
That's the thing.
It doesn't go in the Input slot
Only the FX one.
Edit: Future plan... Put Elastic FX, Popsicle and DFX together in a huge FX Brawl
I personally love it. I down own Daw Cassette or Reelbus, but RE-1 is great imo. My personal favorite for tape effects is ChowTape though.
Would love to see more specific tape emulations built into ChowTape (I'm talking about specific tape recording companies like Tascam, Studer, Sony, Nagra, etc.).
That would be a dream app for me. Considering what he did with the BYOD app (cloning well known distortion pedals), it seems like a possibility. Like Time Machine but with tape recorders 🤤
Oh, yeah. That would be fantastic.
Awesome .. I am going to work with this route. Thanks a lot for your answer.
Can I not use RE-1 as an instrument in and of itself? And then using it in a session, send it directly to an iOS-based recording app (not multitrack - single stereo pair only) is there a recording app that I can pull RE-1 directly into? Not as an effect bus but as an instrument? Have you (or any users) worked with the SPIRE STUDIO iOS app?
My only goal here is to be able to save my output from RE-1 (with a sample loaded) and export the result in WAV format for online projects. I just need to CAPTURE the RE-1 output in real time, WITHOUT picking up nearby ambient sound with the built-in phone mic. I most of my apps I am unable to bypass the microphone. 🧩🤔
Thanks a bunch!
Sorry... never used it like that. But I gotta say i'm a light user
I think it was @Martinj that used it awesomely for some tracks. Maybe he can shed some light (sorry if it wasn't you mate)
Or maybe shout out to @ka010 (the dev)
While writing this, thought of an option... Dropping your sample in an app in the input, put RE in the effects slot, and set your output of preference.
ok... just did a test. Nothing on the input. RE-1 on the effects and audioshare on the output worked fine here
This is great news! Thanks for trying it out- that really helps me out! Working as desired now.
Cheers,
Chris
I don't think there's anything that can touch RE-1 on iOS.
I had an idea for experimental processes using it and am away from my iPad at present so can't test but I wonder if it's possible to send each play head to a different output. If not it's not matter, I'll just use it as a send and replicate it for each instance, turning off all but a single head in each chain.
I've not got the whole process in my head yet but I'll do a screen recording once I have. In pretty sure only RE-1 could do what I want though.
How do you find the general stability? I've had moments when I'm just futzin' around (Trying to get a handle on what's going on) when the feedback/decays totally drop away. I've not found anything specific that causes it, but it's happened on a few occasions.
I've not had any real issues with it to be honest. I tend to build up swells and then use the loop function though so the decays don't get chance to drop away.
Thanks! I should probably read a manual, rather than poke and stab at it. Perhaps being more intentional about it brings better results.
Hell, no, @el_bo - poke and stab are our two best, most reliable tools!
