AUM and AudioShare sample rates.

@j_liljedahl

I’ve just experienced a slight issue with sample rates in that I recorded channel output in AUM (input was from usb audio interface), then switched across to AudioShare only to find that the file had been recorded at 48k. Both AUM and AudioShare are set to use 44.1k. AUM was the first app I opened. This has not happened previously when doing the same thing and I haven’t changed any settings. iPad Pro 12.9” 1st gen, iOS 12. The only difference between this and previous occasions is that I was using Stratosphere Cloud Reverb in the FX slot. Can an AUv3 effect change the sample rate of AUM’s file recorder?

Thinking about it, the channel I recorded didn’t have any effects on it, they were on another channel fed via a mix bus...

Not a huge issue, I just converted the file on import to Cubasis, but I though it was odd that it suddenly happened.

Cheers,
Paul

  • I don't think it's about what app was used inside AUM. Any AU will simply do as instructed by the host.
    If your workflow includes occasional IAAs, probably one of them got stuck in the background (which is why soft or hard reset is always recommended before or after sessions). In that case it's the stuck app that sets these and the rest of the apps will simply follow that. It doesn't help that on some newer iDevices restrictions apply (without dedicated interface you're locked into 48k) and therefore in AUM what you see in the settings is not always what actually set.
    But AUM will always drop you a message when you change settings and it can't execute them (either if it's set by another app or hardware limitations apply) so it makes sense to double check when setup changes (interfaces plugged in/out, IAA being used etc)

  • I didn’t have any IAAs hanging around, my interface is the same as ever (Behringer UCA222) and I just tried again using the mic input and Stratosphere Cloud Reverb without having rebooted the iPad since (any ghost IAAs would still be there) and it’s fine this time. Definitely an odd one.

  • AUM can only record in the actual current hardware sample rate. So it's not possible that it was set to 44.1k and it recorded in 48k, because there's no sample rate conversion in there. You probably had preferred sample rate set to 44.1 but the system was currently locked at 48. In the AUM Settings menu, the sample rate button shows the actual system sample rate, and if you tap it you will see a popup with available sample rates where you can select the preferred one (which is not always the same as the actual system rate for the moment).

  • @j_liljedahl I doubted that AUM was the culprit, to be honest. I’ve been recording without the issue ever since and have changed nothing about my setup, so I’ll just chalk it up to an iOS ‘glitch’ and not worry about it.
