  • Gonna have to watch this vid later but I already agree with the premise. I’ve seen kids on Reddit asking how to make it work on a budget and I keep trying to tell them iOS is the way to go.

It really is! I can’t believe what we have access to on these little devices, and for the prices. Incredible times we live in.

  • I don't even know what qualifies as a beat. :D

Just ask anyone with a phone :D

  • I don't think you understand my life. :)

  • Thanks for sharing, great video, and turned me on to some great plugins, especially Morphit.

  • Lol, I got most of the stuff he mentions... cept NS2, but I got me a Cubasis3. Can I still make a beat?

Not a chance. First you must learn to dance... seriously. I have this from a known authority:

I can cite the exact location but the whole video has value for everyone here.

  • Nice video! I need to pick up morphit and been loving your ns2 kits!

  • This is great..although wondering why he uses GarageBand? Is there something there that I’m missing? Lol

  • It's not as fully featured as a lot of other apps, but I think it's actually very under-rated myself. They have some great sounds and a fairly easy workflow once you understand the approach it takes. I certainly prefer other apps out there myself, but if all I had was Garageband and my iPhone, I don't think it would hold me back that much.

Though it would likely slow me down some too :)

  • Seriously, what constitutes a beat?

The way I understand it, a beat is what the kids call something that contains a bass line, a riff and an actual beat.

But it’s the other way around for the 808.
This is what they call a low-pitched sine wave.
Whippersnappers are oblivious to all the sounds of the iconic TR-808 and they should stay off my lawn.

  • I think it's fine to use the word beatmaking if it refers to stuff with a hip hop influence but it shouldn't be used to refer to making electronic music in general. I think that helps avoid confusion. It probably became a catch-all phrase because it can be used as a one-word gerund.

Maybe in a few years, they’ll be calling all generated sounds “iPads”.

“I like the sound of your iPads. Did you use an iPhone to create them?”

  • It's amazing what can be done on just an iPhone. No excuses!

I very rarely read/post in topics that are not related to Cubasis, GB, SynthMaster and maybe StaffPad.

Agreed - with like more automation, and a mix bus, it’d be super awesome. I still use it from time to time depending on what I’m working on.

It’s funny, I had never thought to just use a pop filter in front of the iPhone mic, that Steve Lacy video was a good share.

Thanks. I think I get it. Percussion, bass, something melodic. Put it into a song format that enables cutting into section to make your own song structure, done. Is it mostly for a particular genre or are people doing this for all sorts of music?

I like GB a lot. Great sounds in there and the midi editor is easy to use.

This guy uses a lot of the presets & smart instruments:

  • @BroCoast Interesting stuff. Does he use iPhone/iPad in the process? Only found a reference to GarageBand/Logic.

I don’t think he is using mobile, I just recognise a lot of the presets.
