reverse engineering super thick bass sound

Hello!

I posted this reference about a year ago with a similar question that was phrased incorrectly

at 1:13 there is a huge bass synth thud,

A year ago @Philandering_Bastard commented that the bass synth at 1:10 could be created by:

'I just created a bass sound with two slightly detuned square waves going into a LP with fairly high Q at around 170 Hz. No distortion necessary imo.'

This works beautifully- however I am now trying to get the combination sound of the more thuddy/plucky bass interaction that occurs at 1:13- what would be the best way to achieve this enormous sound? Also- is this achieved through simply overlapping the bass synth with the kick or is is some sort of additional bass synth with a more aggressive FM thud to it or something like this?

If you're satisfied with your synth bass as it is now, try running it through RRR's Bass Enhancer to see if you can get more girth out of it. (it's free to try)

Also keep in mind your envelope's decay curve. You'll want to use a synth that has adjustable curves. Exponential decays are generally the pluckiest / snappiest. In the ref song, the bass has some attack on the amp until for several beats, then removes the attack at 1:13 for that plucky sound. Attack has more of a logarithmic curve for that smooth fade with a bit of a bump. Acoustically, it's similar to a double bass being bowed and then plucked alternately.

I'll let a mixing wizard talk about how to compress the kick and bass correctly to punch like it is in that song.

  • simple fm operator, i would saturate it using saturn, or whatever saturator. then filter it with a nice q. Also, keep it 100% mono

  • The bass line is largely very tight with the kick drum. A lot of the bigness is the punchy kick rather than the bass synth itself, imo.
