Physical modeling/resonant chamber simulation filter?

Hello!

Is anyone aware of an auv3 that is well suited for simulating piping a signal through an acoustic body / chamber? For example, if I have a sampler playing a shrill piano sound, then I pipe that through a filter that simulates the acoustic properties of the interior of a cello to give it a heavier body/low end?

On desktop I used to love tassman for this but that was 17 years ago

  • There’s a wide variety of parameters to change in this one:

Objeq by AAS is the crown king of acoustic body physical modeling on IOS. This app will be the most authentic and illustrative, with great fine control.

CuSnP is a sympathetic string simulator. You have full control over each strings tuning, and overall density / dampness.

The Modal Synthesizer, Texture synthesizer, and specifically the Resonator module by Audible Instruments in miRack are bloody brilliant.

Drambo's Modal Resonator also sounds great, but doesn't have a huge number of models yet.

Spectrum by Burns audio has the same resonator by Audible / Mutable instruments, and is a free download. The UI isn't the greatest though, but hey, free right?

I think ThAFKnAR (The App Formerly Known as Rooms) or any of the IR loading reverbs
would be effective for this type of filter/simulation processing. You can make IR files or collect them from the internet and load them into one of these AUv3 IR apps. iMPULSATION
    is another I think.

You'd just need to track down an IR for the acoustic chamber you want to impose on a signal. But they are really fun to make like putting your iPhone in a jar or large can and tapping the side to create the Impulse for the recording.

Here's a simple demo of a piano loop played through ThAFKnAR with my homemade IR's made in ThAFKnAR itself:

Most of the effect is slayed on pretty thick but you can dial it way back for more subtle colorings.

@McD thank you for this! I love Thafknar but wasn’t aware that there were a lot of these profiles available online Or that creating them myself was so straightforward

Great example audio too thank you

Super incredible thank you!!! Ecstatic to discover objeq- made by the same company as tassman fantastic thank you again!!

The trick is to run it in Standalone mode and press the "Convolution" button at the top.
Then there's a "Record" target in the lower left. There are settings for sample rate and such.
Once you have made a recording use the Files icon.

Press on one of the files you just made and use the "Copy to impulse responses" option.
Then in your AUv3 instances that IR file will be available. It might be wise to do some audio editing of some impulses to delete silence before the transient sound.

  • Thank you very much for the suggestion Aleyas.
I just purchased Objeq too and I 'm amazed. How could I miss this one! It can shape resonance in a very subtle or drastic way. Very cool as an FX, it gives unexpected and very good results on almost every sources ( melodic or rytmic). Thanks!

I felt the same way you did @moher when I first learned about Objeq. It's one of those hidden gems on iOS that everyone who plays seems to love, but rarely gets mentioned or demonstrated in videos. Also think it's great on anything, but I love how it can totally transform percussion. Pretty neat as a drastic EQ on some sources as well!

You re right Aleyas it completly shines in twisting all kind of drums and percussions. And it seems to get along very well with Beatformer (another discret gem for drum shaping.)

  • I LOVE Objeq, great great app, badly want to see more from AAS (the dev) on iOS
