my favorite tools for saturating and making a sound more full

Hi!

I know some people around here have been getting fed up with my antics coming around posting a lot of questions and disappearing... I realized maybe some people.... ( @McD .... sorry really didn't mean to disappoint- I'm coming back around just putting the polish on it) maybe feel like I come around for dinner and vanish before it's time to do the dishes~ apologies this was never my intention

So... I had two life altering revelations today that I wanted to share with everyone in search of something similar

In the past I've used FAC Bandit extensively to fatten sounds in combination with TB Enhancer- I adore both of these and will continue to use them

However

Today on a wim I downloaded @brambos WOOTT and it's absolutely incredible- beyond brilliant, so much fun and really puts some bounce on your sounds, can thicken up all kinds of signals and inject really fun dynamics- ALSO, shockingy cpu efficient compared to the tools I mentioned above

The other tool that was recommended to me that I've fallen in love with is AAS Objeq- incredible auv3 effect for passing a signal through a resonant chamber with so so so much flexibility- you can really tune it to hit all kinds of sweet spots and add a wonderful sense of depth with different resonators and other parameters

  • Thanks for the shoutout! Good to hear you're having fun with it! (because if it isn't fun, why do it at all?) :)

  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • Try Nembrini PSA 1000 or 1000 Jr. It will give your tracks the polish.

  • Fav chunkyfiers other than the ones you’ve mentioned are RX950 (input driven), MDE compressor, Luxe, and Reamp.

  • All the above mentioned shapers are great... learn to use them and find their role in your music. Take your time. If you start adding WOOTT to every channel - latest, greatest - you'll end up right where you are now. The perception of loudness will take you into the woods, but that's ok, we've all been there.

  • Loudness doesn‘t need (much) saturation... ok, different kind of music, but just watch the impact of an almost totally clean track

(sorry, been on Blue Note today...) o:)

  • @gusgranite that rx950 little $2 app was recommended to me by someone on this forum for a good subtle saturator and wow! Best near free app I’ve gotten in a long time.

  • A lot of good suggestions, all good. For general warmth and adding character, Nembrini PSA is definitely one that never lets me down, so good

  • I use the poop out of Bandit. It's one of the finest plugs I have ever bought.

  • @McD @Gavinski thank you for this!

Re: nembrini, when do you find it useful to use?

I am always hesitant to spend significant cash on saturators as often I find they warm the signal quite a bit when in reality I am after something that sounds very present, but ultimately transparent and rounded like a huge glass hammer against a very resilient glass/metallic dome as opposed to a fuzzy guitar

How does nembrini compare to something like bandit? Would it be worth the price tag for what I am trying to accomplish? Also how does it compare to something like bandit in terms of cpu usage?

Last Q, I couldn’t figure out the difference between the full version and the jr. ~ any thoughts here?

  • I haven't compared it and Bandit directly.

Bandit is super versatile obviously, and does much more than saturation. I just know that when I want to warm something up, I often try a few different tools, and Nembrini psa1000 often comes out top.

For example, I love the sound 'Veena' in the Roli Noise Sounds of India pack. But it is just a bit thin and watery. The Nembrini really transforms it into something much richer, more suitable for solo playing. Magic Death Eye also sounds good, the Nembrini Psa1000 is more versatile though, good for a bit more distortion etc.

The Jr one is mono, the other is stereo. Think that's the main difference.

Haven't paid attention to cpu, don't think it is heavy.

Price - Nembrini seem to often do sales, if you're not in a hurry, maybe wait for a while and grab it in their next sale.

What you’re describing is very much in the PSA1000 wheelhouse. It adds SO MUCH presence, bite, and characterful color, it literally sounds like a huge glass hammer. It adds a certain ‘90s studio honk that’s quite transparent and reminiscent of great analog records. It’s not really a guitar app in my opinion, it’s more like a preamp for bass, drums, vocals, synths, that can also be used as a saturator and filter. I don’t use it for guitar at all. I use it for its special soundstage and vibe, presence and bite, I even use it as glue sometimes. The Senior is stereo and can do mid/side panning and spread. The Junior is mono and more simplified. Both are low enough on cpu. It’s different from the others because it’s a “preamp”.

Fwiw, I just wanna say that I think you raise many interesting questions that have led to lots great discussions here. I was once somewhat critical of your posts (sorry about that haha. Water under the bridge I hope lol), but there’s a common and unique thread that ties them all together, and somehow speaks to the inquisitive nature in those of us audiobussers that share it. This typically ends up in great app recommendations, cool mozaic scripts, and unique Drambo patches or other focused techniques (I subsequently solved the transpose from a major key, to a completely different minor key problem, but you’re probably past that now. If not lemme know and I’ll share the project). I know for one, I click these threads because they pose a unique challenge or are focused on some interesting niche.

So keep up the good questions! (not that you need to hear it from me). They’re definitely a benefit to the community :)
Also, share your progress once in a while, pretty cool stuff you’re working on.

Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.
    Through the unknown, remembered gate
When the last of earth left to discover
    Is that which was the beginning;
At the source of the longest river
The voice of the hidden waterfall
And the children in the apple-tree
Not known, because not looked for
But heard, half-heard, in the stillness
Between two waves of the sea.”

  • @McD @Gavinski just got nimbrini... at first I was sad as it seemed everything I got out of it sounded like an amp simulator

But now I see- for natural sounding beefing up low end it’s genius really reallly reaaaaaaallly nice thank you

@aleyas thank you I’m glad it’s sometimes helpful- I would looooooveee to see how you managed the major/minor transposition problem as I kinda gave up and went around rather than through that specific challenge

  • Glad u dig!

  • Reamp and Lux

  • PSA 1000 gives you a massive range of tone shaping modes... it's like a buffet of amp/stomp hardware for the cost of 1 app. $10 mono (Jr) $20 for stereo which adds phasing, flanging and imaging into the magic spells.

1 - Pre-Amp: This is the input sensitivity control. The Pre-Amp control adjusts the signal level going into the input section of the PSA1000.

2 - Buzz: Controls the low-end break-up and overdrive. You can boost the effect by turning clockwise from the center point indicated by the arrows, and cut by turning counterclockwise. When you turn towards maximum, the sound becomes buzzy. For a clean setting, increase the setting in small increments. For increased definition while using distortion, set the knob in the range between the middle and minimum.

3 - Punch: Sets the amount of midrange break-up and overdrive. Boost or cut from the center point indicated by the arrows. Decreasing from the center point produces a softer break-up. Increasing its setting creates a harder, heavier distortion.

4 - Crunch: Brings out the upper harmonic content and pick attack. For a smoother high end and for clean settings, decrease to taste.

5 - Drive: Act as a volume control on a non-master-volume tube amp.

6 - Low and High: These active low-end tone controls are specially tuned for maximum musicality when used to EQ instruments. Boost or cut ±12dB from its center point indicated by the arrows.

7 - Wet/Dry: Blend from wet to dry signal.

8 - Level: Adjust the output level.

9 - Link: Engage the link for each parameters.

  • @annahahn and don’t forget about these factory presets that came with the original Sans Amp PSA-1, recreated here for iOS by @Tim6502

    https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/40603/nembrini-apps-presets-how-to-manage-them-and-49-psa1000-psa1000-jr-presets

I also like to use Nembrini’s “Loop Vitalizer” preset and add some spread and Analog link. It’s really present and grinds bass very effectively. The whole palette of this app just makes me picture a great acoustic of a recording studio from a certain era.

  • Is there a FabFilter Saturn2 preset that approximates a single-button or single-dial solution?

  • Lordy, ReelBus and Saturn2. How did I forget those? You could stop right there.
