  • Thanks for the answer AQ808, j_liljedhal answered my first question regarding bit depth. I will check out the Auria forum again, I am registered but do not frequent as I rarely use Auria anymore. That may change once the new generation ipad comes out. (Whenever that is) but we'll see. In the mean time I've decided to attempt an A/B comparison.

    Thanks again

  • Thank you @PaulB and @j_liljedahlfor sharing this very interesting links.

There are so many useful posting here, it will take a lot of time to read through them...
    Fantastic!

  • Pardon... The second credits should go to @WMWM..

But also thanks to @j_liljedahl for further information.. :)

  • I know there's little to choose between 44.1K and 48K re quality, but I have to deal with 48K LPCM up to 6 channels in DVD and HDMI environments, with digital interfaces. Currently I have to interpose a D/A followed by another A/D to get down to 44.1 so I can route through AB, but I really need to see the original samples from time to time. I have other stuff going on on my Mac, but its optical in is presently my only untainted by conversion route in.

"Whining about its absence or really even pining for its existence is pretty goofy though."

Only if you don't have 24-bit sources, that is. If you do have them, you'd be out of your head not to want them treated properly.

Fair enough and good point. I knew 'whining' was too far. :)

That said, the argument you're presenting is regarding personal preference, and has nothing to do with the technical subject of the thread.

I'd call it a mix but it's a free Internet. You don't need 24 bits to record Sunrizer into Auria at maximum 'resolution' for instance. I'm not EE but I'm going to go ahead and say that has nothing to do with personal preference.

My long ass post muddied my point. 24 bits is great to have when you need it. There are real use cases for it so AB should probably support it at some point. For the majority of AB use cases though (app to app recording), it's just overhead. I'd much rather have the ability to drag and drop to rearrange my apps in AB, a real MIDI sync solution, interstitial mixers/sends, IAA support... That's personal preference for sure but I suspect development time spent on those sorts of features would add more value to the AB ecosystem for more users than support for 24 bit audio.

  • In regards to the guy in the youtube vid, until he PRODUCES AND MIXES several magical albums that have changed my life, his opinion is worthless to me. The ones who I personally admire and look up to would always choose 24 bit (if it's available) but I also agree it's pointless to hope for it in ios. Just work with what you've got available to capture inspiration.

  • @gjcyrus You make it sound that it's the use of 24 bit audio that makes you admire your musical heroes and not their talents as musicians/producers...

    Surely not...

With the number of posts you've made where you state your preference for sampling sections of other people's music and mixing them into your own productions, surely what you're sampling is only 16 bit, or less?

Ok, now that the mud slinging has gotten old, what about the other 2 items in the topic...

    For example

Dithering, done when going DOWN in bit depth, used to combat truncation distortion, should leave a bit of room when going into mastering to allow this noise. There are different shapes to spread the noise across the audio spectrum. This much is known.

I own a copy of the Mastering app, it gives the dither option. Does anybody know what shape? Is it simple triangle?

Are there any more sophisticated shapes available on ios?

Surly this forum is above the circle jerk it is becoming where people want to argue on who has the biggest app.
    What say you?

Thanks for bringing this up,dithering is still the bigger mystery for me.For example,Final Touch has a lot of dithering options and i have no idea what is best to choose if i use a 16 or 24 bit file (44,1khz).I would appreciate a little enlightenment on that front, thanks.

  • So...you're dithering on you dithering options...? ;-)

  • I'm so tempted to sticky this.

If 16 then no dither, if 24 then dither (if you are going to 16, red book standard cd for example).

The shape will spread the noise from dithering (it's masking truncation errors from going down to 16 from 24). Triangular dither will put low level noise across the spectrum. Other noise shaping techniques will put the noise in the higher frequencies where you have more headroom (less musical signal). I hope this helps and I'm sure someone with more experience can explain it better.

I do not own a copy of Final touch, I'd like to know what it's options are.

  • Thanks for the explanation!

Here you can see the FT dithering options.I still don't own it (recently purchased Audio Mastering and i also have Auria with a lot of Fabby plugs)but it's on my list :)
