The Periodic Table / Primo Levi
Blood Rites, Barbara Ehrenreich, a fascinating tour of the human attraction to violence and warfare. Very relevant right now.
It's not any of the languages you wished for, but I can't recommend "The Boy and The Heron" highly enough. It even won "Best Animated Feature" for the 2024 Oscars. It's a deeply layered Japanese animated movie by Studio Ghibli, directed by Mr. Hayao Miyazaki himself.
So, you can find it dubbed in the language of your choice, or you can find it subtitled in the language of your choice.
Relevant right now as there a TV series in progress - I read the novel Shogun years ago and couldn’t put it down once I started.
Midnight Express - set in Turkey. Great movie
You want a good laugh watch “What We do in the shadows “ the movie, written and directed by Taika Watiti.
To recall just how great fascists are at managing civil societies enjoy “The New Look” on Apple TV. There’s this divide where you support the boot on the neck or you have one on yours… the only remaning option is truly dangerous: resistance. I respect the French and other invaded countries for option 3 and their contributions to humanity.
Good times. History rhymes. I love a good suspenseful story that integrates reality with fashion. Dress to oppress.
a good docu:(full here)
The spin-off tv series on FX is also very good.
“Midnight Diner” (深夜食堂, Shinya shokudō) is the best TV series I ever watched, for me, nothing gets close, not even “M.A.S.H”, “Only Fools and Horses”, and “Lone Wolf and Cub” which are my next in line.
Indeed. The humor in both the movie and the series is often very dry, but not above being quite rude in hilarious fashion.
Ein Nasser Hund, tells the real story of an Iranian/Jewish immigrant kid growing up in Berlins streets in the 90s within the turkic/arabic bubble there.
Colin Robinson is my favorite character in the show. His performance is excellent.
It a movie but a ‘miniseries’ - I have really enjoyed the 2024 version of Shogun so far.
I previously read the book watched the early 80s miniseries, and while the book is great, the early 80s version wasn’t very good (or at least made the whole thing too focused on Blackthorne as the focal point, which is totally misinterpreting the book).
Half-way through now, am I’m eagerly awaiting the next Tuesday after I watch an episode.
As an energy vampire he has to underplay his character.
