A few of the things that really annoy is spasmic arm/hand movements while speaking and humping the table/gear when jamming. Then again it may be part of a persons 'personality' but I don't give a flying f, it's still annoying!

    Exactly! Magician hands! LOL

  • The worst is find a new chan and think wow. This guy is bright. Then I realize person is a one trick pony who uses the SAME LOGIC or TRICK with every vid!

It’s like- here we go...the “secret 3rd oscillator trick” ....version 43....gtfo

If your catalogue is as unimpressive as mine, what do you really have to offer? I’d rather read a manual than watch some dude with his face faffing about for 30+ mins... Rant done.

    Check Mate!

Reminds me of when I taught high school-
All the principals/VP were failed teachers who went on to get advanced degrees because they sucked at teaching so now are in charge of teachers.

I would love to know the motivation of some YT.

Do they think they are that good?

Do they think they are that interesting?

Do they think their voices are pleasing?

Are they trying to be famous?

IN OTHER WORDS- WTF were they thinking?

    It’s all about content quantity.

Quality comes later, but then the older fans call them sellouts.

When you decide to commit to making YouTube videos, it’s just like any other aspect of the entertainment business. You have a desire to do it, whether you’re crippled with self doubt or the most confident person out there it really makes no difference. You just know you need to do it, knowing that no matter how good your content - there will be haters. You have to be broad shouldered and just do it and hopefully you can take it when someone you don’t know rips into you like a vicious little keyboard warrior. For me, my channel is a slow grow but the people who take the time are usually very supportive and complimentary. I have only had a couple of vicious comments so I think I’m doing ok - but I am my own biggest critic. So criticism is always welcome, my ego is very much in check. Motivations differ. For me, I’ve played for big bands and had my time in the spotlight. Now I’m older and I enjoy teaching and sharing knowledge and I get to do some creative stuff with my playing - I just really enjoy it. The best part though, is when someone watches a video and then reaches out for some further help - and I help them fix an issue or teach them something. I don’t do well enough at it to make any money - it’s just something I genuinely enjoy.

  • Joking aside I think the democratisation of video production has been amazing. There are some very talented people on the tubes.

And some not so good ones too, but you obviously need to start somewhere :-)

Some of the crap ones might just one day be amongst the best.

It’s pretty easy to to tolerate the crap to be able to enjoy the best ones.

Btw. i wanted to say, one important factor why i like those videos where is just static view of boxes and hands are doing stuff - i learn from them. I'm watching closely what the guy is doing and learning tricks, shortcuts, methods of performing. For me big source of inspiration and learnining are youtubers like Ivar Tryti, Substan, Red Means Recording, Dave Mech, Miles Kvndra.

    :-D

I like Youtube videos too. As I mentioned in my previous post, it's just poking fun but a lot of the videos are really useful. For example, Ever since "Upstairs at Erics" was released I've always wanted a Sequential Circuits Pro-One. So when Behringer came out with their clone I watched quite a few videos on it to see if it had the character I was after (it did). Loopop's pro-1 review was great for this. Nostalgia-itch gratifyingly scratched

As for the pot plants it's obvious why the first person to do it did it -- it gives the videos an identity. But then so many people have copied it it has become something of a parody, even though I don't think some of the 'creators' seem to get the irony ;-)

As for the jam videos, I'm not much of a fan of those. I find a lot of them to be self indulgent and I can't be bothered to sift through them to find the gems. Also, if I want to listen to music there are a zillion songs in iTunes I've not heard yet that I'd rather hear first. I'm not too fussed by what somebody can do with a particular machine, as that's always going to be subjective and people can make great music with 'bad' gear and likewise a lot of people make terrible music with great gear. The reviews give me more of an insight into whether a piece of gear looks like it might be fun to play. I should avoid them though, as I already have too much gear and not enough time to use it.

Anyway. It's all good. I think it's great that anybody can make a video. Not all videos need to be great. I respect anybody's right to upload a stinker. I also think it's fine to poke harmless fun. Besides, who cares what I think? Just because I think something is crap doesn't mean it's crap to you. Even if actually is crap :-D :-D :-D

Anyway. It's probably best not to kill a pot-plant in the name of music.

The compressor video is super old. They’ve asked me to do a new one as they’ve noticed that the quality of my videos has improved a lot - and that’s an issue too for a YouTuber. What do you do about your old crappy videos? I’ve left them all up there kind of warts and all but - I do cringe when I see them now and then.

The compressor is something I’m really proud of. Obviously, if you want lots of control over your compression, this is not the pedal for you. But it’s a cheap, easy solution for bass compression that really does sound nice. The built in overdrive is a really nice bonus too and I use it a lot. The one drawback with mini pedals of course is if you’re clumsy you knock the chicken knob and ruin the way you’ve preset it. But it’s worth it to me - just having to be a little more careful. My old Ampeg Scrambler weighs more than the 10 pedals I currently have on my board. Once upon a time my pedal board was heavier than my bass amp. Now, it’s so light it’s not worth weighing it.
