BeatHawk - imported sound converting into birds chirping??

This is happening on the Audio Unit and the IAA one with zipped files and single files. I import via files app - it appears as a file in the browser. When I load it into the cell selection it converts to a chirping high pitched sound. The other stock sounds appear to be working okay.
Any thoughts?

What sample rate, and bit-depth and format are the file?

  • WAV 16bit 44100 Hz

What if you import while in BeatHawk?

  • I am in BeatHawk.
In the browser page I tap the hamburger (top left) when in user library.
    Tap ‘iCloud import file’
Tap on selected file in newly opened files app
    File auditions ok in browser.
Tap a box in ‘cell selection’
    Tap ‘load’
    Yellow box indicates loaded.
Tap the box and it has converted into a high pitched chirp - as though it we’re playing the sample at high speed.

It works fine for me. When you tap and hold the the file name in the browser, BeatHawk will play the file. Does it sound correct there?

  • Yes it does. Then I tap the cell - press the load button - then it chirps when I press it in the cell section and back in the pads when I exit.

  • So, just confirming: it sounds fine if you tap and hold in the browser and only gets transposed up when you load it into a pad.

Does this happen with ANY wav file?

Try recording one in AUM and import it and see what happens.

I wonder if there is possibly something in the .wav file that tells it what its base note is. There can be metadata in the wav file that perhaps BeatHawk is using.

After you import it, go to BeatHawk's pitch/keyboard page and figure out how transposed it is.

  • Yes you’ve got it, and it is happening with any wav file.
They have all been recorded in AUM.
I tried the pitching in the keyboard already - can’t get it to sound anything like the original.
I had used it previously and it was fine so I don’t know what’s going on.
I have also tried reinstalling BeatHawk.
I’m off to bed now to sleep on it. Thanks for your help with this.

Hold on -I’ve just tried it on an old Air1 and it’s working ok there on 12.4.8
The problem is on this Air 2 running 13.6
I have just tried it also on another Air 2 and it’s working as expected??? It must be something to do with that particular iPad.
Soft reset time - will delete - soft reset then reinstall and try with a fresh new wav.... here we go
Ok! That seems to have worked! It will now import new and other wavs as expected.... though the same problem exists with the batch that was causing the problems. They must have been corrupted somehow? I had made them by putting a large file into Auditor - slicing it - export to Audioshare - zipped it then imported them to BeatHawk before unzipping .... then the problem started - something must have happened within that process. I will try to recreate it then post back tomorrow with the results.
Thanks again for your help 👍🏻 Now it is time for bed 🛏 😃

If you sliced and exported from the slicer, there is a base pitch in the metadata for the slices I think. If the base pitch was set to a low number, then BeatHawk is probably pitching them up accordingly. Not sure if there is a BeatHawk pref that allows that to be ignored.

  • Oh maaaaan, @espiegel123!

I haven’t listened to Holdsworth in well-over a year. Thanks for the prompt!

He is always high on my favorite guitarists list.

    Passed way too soon...

Yeah. Too soon. I hadn’t listened to him in a while and went on a re-listening binge of tracks from my favorite period (74 - 81 maybe?) and discovering all the great live bits people have posted.

Aha! Well done - right on the ball - that sounds like exactly what is happening - they are pitching up considerably and that is causing the chirping - and when I export the wavs to other apps then they seem to play fine.
I’m just going to run a test to see if it happens again...... and boom! Yes it happened again.
I haven’t come across a BeatHawk switch for ignoring that and I’ve been round and round them over the past couple of days 😀
As an experiment I converted a sample in AudioShare at the end of another test following the same process into AIFF format then back to WAV - then sent it to BeatHawk - and it worked properly.
Expertly diagnosed indeed - Thanks again!

Is this "slicer" you mention a component of AUM?

If YES, is there a way to set a "base pitch" in the AUM component?

I know AudioShare is also from the developer of AUM, @j_liljedahl, so is the slicing being done in AudioShare while in AUM?

Just trying to connect the dots here.

Hi - the slicing was done in Auditor then sent to AudioShare.
