WILL APPS/SOFTWARE RULE AGAIIN SOON?
I think so.
It appears the insatiable greed of some companies, changing economic conditions, and pricing of hardware may make it so.
For a while, the “Circuits” and other reasonable priced items were getting gear in many people’s hands.
But unlike any other market I have ever seen. Prices never go down. Companies appear to be using the post Steve Jobs Apple approach.
New releases with no depreciation of old ones while new ones escalate at crazy rates.
And then you have Moog and Elektron releasing “new”..cough..colored items acting like they are new devices?
I don’t know. I do know prices of shit goes up and up. Nothing goes down regardless of age. This is amazing as an investment. But, I think if prices don’t adjust to the economy of musicians that software once again may become king. And why wouldn’t it? How many new synths are digital? Right?
Just a quick thought after I have been pricing things lately. What do you think?
Key is -find a good friend who has gear to help you out with a fair deal....maybe that is the best route.😉

In fact, I don't believe that music hardware ecosystem is expensive at all. You have a lot of alternatives.
There are a lot of other "hobbies" where things are a lot more expensive and the prices continues escalating.
The economy of middle class people in their 30s and 40s who produce music inspired by 90s electronic music? I think every genre has been mainly software-based for the past ten years, and before that, the MicroKORG was the popular thing.
One thing with Hardware u can trade it in.

I think the whole global model of manufacturing is under scrutiny now, and I would imagine the supply chain is becoming more of a challenge for the musical instrument market, as it is for most manufacturing. I would expect prices to rise slightly for those companies who need to procure supplies in western markets as opposed to China and others.
I actually think prices have come down, adjusted for inflation, and I think that is due to cheaper manufacturing costs. Will that continue is my question. I sort of expect that the above model will continue with less pressure if a new administration comes in in the U.S. and trade wars are tamped down, in the shorter term.
We are now addicted to cheap products, self included. I look around my studio space sometimes and think, wow what I have at my disposal is an abundance of riches that most people would never have in the past. I don't have alot of expensive gear, but what I do have is powerful. And mostly not made in my home country. And predominantly purchased used prior to purchase.
Will software rule? I have no clue of the numbers of that market but just thinking out loud with you @RUST( i )K - most of my software was acquired in the past two years.

But, yes..supply chain is bastard with Covid. Being what a high volume of raw material and components came from China.
I think the following will happen.
ROLAND gets it- Variety SMALL affordable boxes and embracing hybrid work flow
MOOG will lose people before they reduce prices. Ironically- they may need to look at their history-lightning might not strike again. Pulling them from the abyss. Moog needs to be cautious they don’t start to be perceived as a status symbol for hipsters- ya know?
Elektron is done. The legacy products will be standards. Digitone Digitakt Octatrack is the highlight reel 10 years from now.
Behringer will continue to grow and will be in Target or Best Buy in the next 1.5-3 years. Behringer will be the Yamaha or Casio for a generation.
Arturia gets it- reasonableness and common sense.

Companies I feel have internal battles for resources for software teams versus hardware production. Software is much cheaper for a company. So many try to integrate .
But Novation, which I love....well I feel like they are so torn in multiple directions they have lost their identity. No new gear except rehashing Launchpads that in reality the OLD LPAD PRO could have been sequenced with a proper script. They ditch the MonoStation. And all that is left is a $1400 and $2500 synth or apps? What?
For other companies the best way to see what shape they are in, go to like Sweetwater and what deals are there? What products have the ability to finance over time? What type of inventory can they supply to a Guitar Center or Sweetwater?
I think another anomaly to pricing is modular. Big companies I feel are looking at the pricing of modular and some how making equivalencies floor MSRP with their non modular gear . This is an interesting dynamic.
And as for modular- unless companies start to price things fairly- many of these newer companies will be gone. The components are relatively cheap. The technology is old. So, charging $550 for a filter is silly. IMHO
There needs to be a reset of supply, demand, and supply chains. Under the umbrella of recovery the Covid /Chinese /economy that has ravaged the rest of the world as pandemic spread needs to sort it self out.

If I was a hardware company (or frankly any company in a consumer market) I'd be sweating bullets wondering if/how/when my business will be further knocked around by Covid/world events and if people will just stay home and play with the gear, read the books, eat the rice that they already have in the house. I am very fearful of further disruptions ahead. But that's life.
But, if I was a hardware company, I would be looking for that Moog type product that the smaller group of people would buy and would pay big dollars for. I think the market for the cheap is going to be all Behringer in a few years as you say.

Roland just released TR-6S and TR-06 Boutique. Sequential just announced they're making Prophet 5 and 10 again.
Thus delaying the return of everyone back into The Box again for yet another decade or so.

i don't think SW and HW competites ... Apples and oranges. Both have own pros and cons. I made lot of music with SW and HW. In some periods i used mainly SW, in other periods mainly HW. Don't preffer any of them... Currently i'm in "strictly HW" phase and enjoying it a LOT, but i'm pretty sure i will return to SW universe again at some point in future... It's endless cycle...
Ironically, i definitely spent lot more $ on iOS apps and iOS HW (iPads, iPhones) during last 10 years than on HW synths and grooveboxes, because i usually sell one HW piece to fund other one, but i can't sell apps i'm not using, and i still have almost all iPads and iPhones i ever purchased (with probably just one exception) simoly because i don't want tomsell them too cheap because they're still in perfect condition :-))
Would have thought the latest IOS mess - in this case IOS 14 - would get people thinking twice about dumping all hardware just for IOS apps.
HW/SW mix has been here for years and it's not going away.

You buy hardware for the price of a car and they’re already working on the next hardware that will make yours obsolete unsupported “legacy models”.
Exactly. That’s the surprising part. The amount of things I can do with iOS is insane. And I can do it anywhere. 🤯
Now, when I go to the music stores and go through pedals and other gears, I’m like “Do I even need this?”🧐
That said, I bought a LOT of music gear this year. An Artiphon instrument One, An Apogee Jam (was on sale for $50), and a couple others.😆
I believe hardware has a place. But I’m hoping companies actually do some major improvements instead of “minor updates”. But then again, if they do major updates, and run out of ideas, they won’t have anything else to add on their updates.🤓
Overall, I’m keeping an eye on gears for iOS. Else, I’ll just make one 😈

iMS-20 app led me to a real MS-20 Mini. One of my attractions to the MS-20 Mini is the fact that it unlikely do ever get a software update. Doesn't need it.
Software updates are not always good. See IOS 14 thread.
You don't ever want to be in a situation where a bad OS update ruins all your gear. You want some gear that will still allow you to make music regardless of OS updates.

i love hardware instruments. i grew up in the 80s playing a bass and banging on drums... and before that turning a cardboard box and magic markers into a fake synth and pretending to jam along with albums i loved..... there’s def something in the activity of playing an instrument designed out of circuits and wires and keys and strings , a human thought process of designing a stand alone instrument fora specific purpose that is and will always be a part of why i like making music in the first place.
ever since the digital age humans have changed, progress happens over night as opposed to over years, and while i think that’s pretty cool, i’m not opposed to it, but i will always prefer humanity in the more organic, moving parts, slower moving physical world over digital, with instruments and everything else. i think hardware has always been pretty expensive if you look at the history of instruments, however we certainly are capable of reducing the price in this day and age, and i really hope to see that thinking catch up to those creating synths and other instruments to make them more affordable to the end user. certainly the price puts a wedge in it and is a good reason why software is the go to for many of us. if i can buy 5 soft synths for 300$ as opposed to that being a down payment on one, obviously i’m going to for the soft synths most of the time and only purchase physical instruments on occasion.
the fact we can carry around so many synths in our pockets is incredible and i love it, i love ios music making, just look at my purchase history lol! but still i get the most satisfying jam sessions from playing on hardware instruments and recording to tape opposed to a daw time line...
with the expense to do that and amount of time i have to make music, softsynths win cuz i can get a lot more done a lot faster due to being able to be alot lazier about sound design and not having to choose from just one or two synths and can just press delete on any take that i’m not happy with.
all this to say i love both, but if i had the time and money id use 80% hardware and fill in the gaps digitally

Despite I spend most my time with the ipad config there are some things I like a lot more in the hw, especially the physical knobs, sliders, dials, etc... They are so immediate. Ok, ok I know I can configure a midi controller for this purpose, but still...
Another thing (but this could be definitely improved by the devs), I don’t understand why it is so complicated to select a particular sound preset in case of most of the iPad soft synths. Too small buttons on the screen so I easily miss them and need to touch them twice or 3times therefore. And/or you have to open a menu then a submenu and browse the presets displayed too small letters.
This concept reminds me to some modern cars in which you can access some basic functions like A/C, seat heating, changing radio stations, etc. only through menus on the infotainment screen.
