piezo pickup fun. and questions
I just hooked up a piezo pickup to my mic input. if i use impaktor. i can tap the pickup and get very dynamic drumming.
I wonder. is there a way in another app to hook it up to send out midi note at different velocities when i tap the piezo? maybe drambo or miRack? i don’t know.?
Comments
i thought i rembered something in Drambo ?
You can definitely do this in dRambo.
You can get it to resonate in MiRack but I've yet to try
getting midi notes out at different velocities.
I'm quite sure you could do this in MiRack as well.
cool, how do you do this in drambo ?
FAC Envolver will send a MIDI note or CC for every "tap" in the audio input.
I was pushing hard on @FredAntonCorvest to change the MIDI note based upon frequency ranges
like a metal tap versus a cardboard box thump but I didn't convince him it would be H-U-G-E.
He has since spun out several really good apps so he's always thinking of what we would like.
But as a drummer I want this MIDI trigger using simple piezo pickups or just tapping in the case in
different zones but I'm sure sub 10-ms pitch detection is a lot harder than I think and there's not
enough of us to justify an update to Envolver but it could be on his list since Envolver is really
unique in it's contribution to the platform... nothing like it.
For CC use cases it can map an envelope to a CC and create a useful side-chain illusion with the
right CC into a synth in AUM or other DAW's.
exactly what i was thinking. i’d like to take 3 or 4 piezo pickups; set them on different materials, and have them trigger different midi notes.
Fred, please do it, this would be amazing!!!

To evaluate different pitches, add Peaking EQ modules with high Q and high gain, fine tuned to your material resonances. From my experience they work better than BP filters.
so what slot do you put drambo in AUM. instrument slot , fx slot, or midi slot. to get this setup to trigger another synth app in AUM
Load Drambo "Music Effect" (MFx) in an effect slot (one with audio input as a source) and choose Drambo from the list of MIDI sources on your synth in AUM.
NOTE: It's easy to take an input in AUM and route it to three precision EQ's and put a FAC Envolver on
each AUM channel using a different MIDI Note and do this now.
We also have stereo channels to use to identity 2 different trigger surfaces by splitting L and R signals
in AUM.
FAC Envolver is pretty CPU intensive as I recall so there may be limits on this line of thinking.
that’s what is was. the wrong one. i was using fx. thanks that works now
I thought Drambo was the new Impaktor and could basically do all Impaktor can and more... if so, then surface material and velocity should all be possible to program.
Personally haven’t had time to figure it out or even tinker in Drambo, but maybe someone has already?
Yes. It has the EQ's and all the right modules to be the solution for this use case. But it's got a learning curve... but @rs2000 could knock it out in 2 days max. We just need to let him know we'd like it, I think.
He's fast, responsive and really creative making Drambo Racks and Presets.
yeah, let him know. i’m gonna start building a housing for my piezos installed in different sizes shells. hopefully it is enough of a difference i. resonant frequency that it can differentiate from one another and then dial that signal in within drambo and be a able to trigger a kick, snare, and hi hat with it. 👍🏻 should be fun.
FAC Envolver is special! I use it to create a ducking delay. Send audio into the Envolver, convert to MIDI CC, then invert the CC output and use that to control the output volume of a delay. Works better than even the Eventide ducking delay in the TimeFactor because I can see the wave form in Envolver and adjust the parameters to be exactly what I want. I use several instances on several separate delays. It works like a charm!
@eross Great, looking forward to this!
@ThinAirX FAC Envolver cannot separate signals by pitch.
rs2000, it senses signal amplitude. When the input signal is over the threshold amount, the delay output is attenuated, ducked. The cool thing is at the end of a phrase (I set it with very long feedback), the last few notes delay off into infinity, or until I play the next phrase.
ok, I finished my piezo drum pad. it is essentially a box with 3 different size chambers in it. each chamber has a piezo pickup in it. each chamber resonates at a different frequency. what I want to do in Drambo, is take the signals coming from each chamber, filter each so that it triggers 3 different midi notes out of drambo.
what I need help with is how to setup in drambo. I know i need to split the frequency up in 3 parts( filter for that). then i need to convert the audio to midi, assign a midi note to each of the frequency ranges, and then send it out of the app.
anybody have any advice on how to do that?
finished
building and wiring my little piezo drum trigger. now i just need to figure out how to make it trigger 3 separate midi notes in Drambo. and it’ll be sweet! it’s already super fun with impaktor
@eross
That looks really nice.
Well done.
thanks
