Updating from Air1 to Pro 12.9 3rd gen (headphone question)
Hey dudes, as the title suggests ..
Currently I like to jam out thusly:
phone playing mp3s... Headphone out of that into a 6-way star 3.5mm jack gadget (used for sharing audio) think of it like headphone sharing for 6 ppl)
iPad running thumbjam or similar, 3.5 headphone jack line out, in to the star gadget.
---- finally, headphones also connected to the star, so I can play along to tunes coming from the phone.
This is fun for me.
But, I want a faster iPad really.. time has come...
I have my eye on a 3rd gen pro.
It has no headphone jack (crapola).
-- but, i.have seen for example, 3rd party CCKs with built in headphone jack on them.
A bit long winded but...
If I went that route, had a wee 3.5mm cable from said CCK, in to the star.. think this would work?
I fortunately avoided the whole headphone jack removal bullcrap for a while, but now I need to workaround it.
What have been some methods for peeps out there?
Ps- does one HAVE to buy Megabucks £££££ airpods or are they actually civil about it and don't mind standard Bluetooth buds? Tanx.
Honestly I wish it wasn't this way..... If rather reserve bluetooth on my iPad for say... an actual instrument! Lol... I'm assuming iPad won't handle any more than 1 Bluetooth gadget at a time?
Cheers all

new ipads can use any random china usb-c hub / adapter /gadget. no restrictions. I tried a few with mixed results...best advice - get a proper Apple dongle, its worth it. Bluetooth got painful latency, forget it.

I would say that the bluetooth issue depends on what music you make. I quite enjoy noodling with generative modular sequencers with an entirely wireless setup. And as there isn't really any realitime interaction, then bluetooth is fine (and the ££$$£ airpods pro do sound fine)
@SkEvolver Using your (presumably passive) 6-way headphone distributor as effectively a mixer raises a whole lot of questions about impedances of the sources and the headphones. Your new source, from whatever dongle you choose, might work fine, or could upset everything. You may want to consider moving the mp3 player onto your new device as well, and mixing with AUM or some other app.
The iPad can handle multiple Bluetooth devices at the same time. Bluetooth audio isn't a good option for music making though due to the high latency. It's OK for listening and maybe for mixing but for live playing it's just impractical. Bluetooth MIDI is fine though.
Thanks for the support guys, and useful, helpful comments.
Since I'd be going to usb-C now.... I'll need to change my CCK which is a bit of a pisser.
I'm a bit disappointed to see apple's official USBC cck didn't have the headphone jack.
However this £15 unit on Amazon does.
Think it will work ok?
I kind of resented buying the original cck based on how much they asked for it, so bought a 3rd party at first, it failed. Once bitten...
@uncledave , impedance, definitely, it's far from perfect but I make do for now.
This is the £15 3rd party CCK:

You can have at least 5 bluetooth midi devices connected at the same time (maybe more, I've not needed to try). Then you can also have bluetooth audio at the same time.
Edit: sorry, mostly repeating what @wim said above
Hi guys, thanks for your help and information.
I'm about to pick up a 3rd Gen 12.9 tomorrow.
I've come to terms with the need to get wireless buds by now, but 1 thing I just discovered is bothering me..
I plan to use this like most ppl... Connected to audio interface via one of apple's adaptors.
But to my surprise, I can't find a USB-C to USB adaptor which also has that extra lightning port on it for charging a you use it.
Am I dreaming, or do they actually not offer this kind of CCK for the usb-C iPads!!?
-- I've enjoyed my lightning camera connection kit for years!!!
I've got a drawer full of USB-C hubs at this point and haven't had issues with any. I haven't bought any with a built-in headphone jack though, as I've preferred to use a separate USB audio interface for modularity. I think all the USB-C hubs with audio jacks become the audio output, regardless of whether or not you have something inserted.
USB-C hub with PD passthrough, something like a UGreen USB streamlined audio dongle, and some USB MIDI controllers and you've got an awesome setup. Plus with the "remote" headphone connection you can distance your iPad from all the cabling.
I've started a couple of threads on USB-C hubs and extension cables with links.
Thanks all for your help.
I went with the VAVA usb-C hub in the end.
It has 3x usb3 ports, hdmi out, micro sd card slot and SD card slot. Seems to be working well.
Only thing I lack on it is a 3.5mm headphone jack which would be icing, but been happy with it so far, and glad to see that ipadOS is pretty decent now with regards to file management.
