so curious about SongKit

Anyone used it? Sounds like a fascinating idea and programming feat.

Bought it to encourage more. Good developer — neat concept — solid execution

  • I haven’t used it for composing, but it’s fantastic to be able to grab tabs from anywhere on the web and have it a nice clean format. You can convert the tabs to different keys and instruments as well.

  • Im interested too but still waiting for the bundle. I have his another app (Chord! ) so could grab it cheaper.

  • I'm curious if SongKit is a more sophisticated version of the Song Book functionality in Chord! ?

  • Wow, just realized I had Chord! already and its an amazing app. So extremely well done and what I've hoped to find in terms of looking up chords per scale etc... Sad state that I was looking for an app that did what an app I already have does

The bundle with SongKit+Chord! is now available!
    https://itunes.apple.com/us/app-bundle/id1533191888?mt=8

  • Bundle is Only $11.99 is US. That’s 3 bucks off, not bad. But if you have 1 of 2 apps you’ll probably get a proper deal...

  • SongKit on its own £9.99, complete my bundle £9.00. No idea how that works, but purchased anyway – appreciate the attempt, and not really sorry to send more of my money @SongKit's way.

Not too good, I saved 1.49. No biggie. This app is very useful to me.

    Thanks a lot!
Chord! cost $5 alone, SongKit $10 alone, and the bundle $12 instead of $15.

It means that if you already own Chord!, you only have to pay $7 instead of $10 to get SongKit,
and if you already have SongKit, you only have to pay $2 instead of $5 to get Chord!
And if you already have both apps, well thank you very much!

Feel free to reach me if you spot any issue or have some feedback about the app!

  • Bought both separately. Worth every penny.

Just bought the bundle, mainly cause it seems great and it looks like a labour of love and I want to support the dev.
I haven’t delved into it cause it’s deep, but just a quick question, can it display chords that omit the tonic? I want it mostly for jazz chords, and many times chords with the root omitted are enharmonic with 4 string voicings, but I use them all the time (for instance all from the melodic Cm6=F9=Am7b5=B7alt)?

  • Thank you very much for your support!

With the current version of the app, you can't omit the root when displaying chords, nor you can't add information about this fact in the chord symbol. It seems however perfectly implementable.

Right now, the app splits the information into two distinct entities: the chord symbol which is voicing agnostic, and the voicing which is explicitly defined on an instrument. It may worth adding an intermediate state where you can insert some voicing prescription into the symbol (like being rootless or what kind of inversion for example). I need to check that it doesn't break things elsewhere in the app and that this new information is also used when it can (for example when computing voicings).
But this would allow specifying more swiftly how you intend the chords to be played without the burden of being absolutely explicit. It would also allow users to generate voicings adapted to their preferences while preserving the intent of the composer.

This is definitively a great suggestion, and this will come at some point for sure!

I'm focusing right now on the Mac version because I want both versions to be on the same level so I can add new features on both versions at the same time. I'll keep your suggestion in mind in the meantime and see how it goes.

This was just a passing thought, please don’t break what is already a great app from the little I’ve been able to tell. Great app, not regretting my purchase the least bit! Great job, it is going to be very useful for all those songs I currently keep on the notes app. Really happy with this little gem, and I haven’t even tried the song one.

Edit: being rootless would of course mean there’s a root implied, so knowing a key of course. I only tried it for like half an hour so I’m sure I only scratched the surface. But it seems like a great app. Well done 👍

  • I like the idea to be able to quickly annotate chords with additional information. This fits the spirit of the app as the user only need to add minimal information while the app figures out the rest.
Let say you wrote the song for piano and selected the 2nd inversion of F7 as the voicing of some F7 chord. If you switch to a guitar instrument, the app will recompute voicings for F7 but will forgot the "2nd inversion" info from the piano voicing, and will probably select another unrelated F7 voicing. If you're able to specify the 2nd inversion at the chord symbol level (instrument-independent), you will be able to switch from piano to guitar while preserving kind of voicing you're looking for.
