1st Note is missing when you start to play on external midi

Hi
been off for a while :(
My setup is Yamaha mg10xu, CCK, ipad or iphone, akai mpk225, korg module

When you start to play on mpk first note is not played. Then all is ok... when you stop playing, wait some time and start again - no 1st note. If you play, pause and play again (no longer wait) no problem, all note are there.

What could be wrong?
Want to buy 88 keys for my kid to play, but if there will be the same problem, then.. :(

Thank you

  • @Goozoon Is the MPK225 directly connected to the CCK? No USB hub, etc. in between?

Which iOS version are you using? Has this always happened, or is it the result of recent updates?

This sounds like what happens with Bluetooth typing keyboards, where the KB goes to sleep, and the first character restores the connection, but is not transmitted. I've never heard of it with USB music KBs.

  • older ios on ipad air 2nd gen, newest ios on iphone x
ios is connected to yamaha via powered usb hub and cck (so it should be yamaha/hub, probably)

And is the MPK225 also connected to the hub via USB?

How does it work if you connect the MPK225 direct to the CCK, with no hub or mixer?

Is the "newest" iOS version 14.0.1, or maybe 13.7?

Just trying to understand your exact configuration, since it could make a difference.

Edit: Looking at the Akai manual, I notice that you should switch it On while holding the Preview button, for use with iOS. Sounds a little odd, but could this be the problem?

  • Yamaha problem, even with macbook and Reason/radical piano
with or without usb hub, first note after a oause wont play
if i set release time for module on iphone/ipad to max, i see the tail of the first note

on macbook tried the settings with number of samples, went down to 7ms but still only note tail

  • I'm still not clear what your Yamaha mixer has to do with this, or why it needs to be involved when trying to isolate a problem. Or do you actually mean "Akai", not "Yamaha"?

Can you try using an app like the free Midi Wrench to see if the first note is actually being transmitted by the MPK225 controller? If it is not being transmitted, then it sounds like the controller is actually shutting down in a period of inactivity. That's definitely not normal behavior. I use three MIDI keyboards of different makes, connected directly to a CCK or through a USB hub, and have never had a problem (iPad Air and iPad 6, various iOS versions up to 13.7).

  • if i connect akai via cck to ipad/iphone - no problem at all
if yamaha is involved (it a usb interface and Stereo out for speakers) then i dont hear the first note, only it's tail sound. Midi is transmitted, because i see level leds on yamaha right after i press the note, no sound at the beginning and if the note is susteained i hear the tail. Then all notes plays as it should. Wait a bit and then again, no first note.

Maybe i need to buy a proper interface. Or yamaha has some sleep function on the output... damn

  • @Goozoon with the Yamaha mixer plugged in - when you play a track back are you hearing everything from the start or do you still miss the first note? Not concerned with the keyboard midi input - seems like the problem is associated with the mixer.

  • I had a look at the manual. https://usa.yamaha.com/files/download/other_assets/1/331001/mg10xu_en_om_c0.pdf

It’s pretty rare for a mixer to go into sleep mode.

  • @Goozoon OK, now we're getting somewhere. Since you see the level leds on the Yamaha, it looks like the digital audio is reaching the mixer. Can you check with headphones instead of the speakers?

  • tried monitor our and stereo out, headphones - will try

  • Damnt it.. it is JBL battery powered speaker im currently using
    What a stupid mastake

  • Thank you to all
    Thank you

  • @Goozoon Sounds like a good choice. Glad it's resolved.
