Anybody using this MIDI Hub? - ESI M4U eX

Wondering if anybody has feedback on using this hub with iPad?

  • Yes! I got one a couple of weeks ago, I’ve not used it much yet, but no problem connecting to my iPad Mini 2 / USB3 CCK. It arrived set to USB2 mode (default I think), I’ve not tried the USB3 mode. I have an Audient Evo 4 in the post which I intend to connect via this.

Cool. I ended up pulling the trigger myself and should arrive in a day or two.

Will be interesting to hear back how your combo works out.

  • I was looking pretty hard at those, but ended up getting a BomeBox... that I haven’t put to real use yet.

  • The Evo 4 arrived today, entirely plug and play hooking up via the M4U 👍🏻

Nice! Seems like that will be a decent combo.

I’m quite interested to hear how the automatic detection & assignment of the ports as either an input or output works. Especially when having hardware connected as both. There’s not much in the way of user reviews out there atm.

Hopefully get mine in a few days so this will be one of the first things I test.

That’s intetesting. What was the selling point for you of the Bome over the ESI?

I’ve wondered about getting the Bome but my instincts suggest I could do most of its functionality in StreamByter/MIDIFire. Probably a cool box to tinker with though.

I wanted a fair number of 5 pin MIDI - over 4 outs, I’ll probably run the M4U as 2-in/6-out.
I’ve looked at Bome specs previously but only 1x1 5 pin? I found the M4U used, so also a cheap option 😂

In iOS you see 8 in and 8 out ports, when you send data to an out the hardware port switches to out mode. It seems to work transparently.

Been using this for a few weeks now, I really like it.

It has 3 Standalone modes... MIDI merge 7 inputs to one output, MIDI thru to 7 outputs or 4 pairs of IO.

When connected to iPad or PC then all the ports can be used as either flexible Ins or Outs and these are detected automatically, so the ports are not fixed to either function. This works great.

I'd happily recommend this for those needing a MIDI hub for iOS.

I also use a Novation Audiohub and had considered getting another one but Novation no longer have these in production. The 3 USB slots being the attraction there.

Looking for an alternative is how I came across the ESI M4U ex and like the Audiohub it also has the 3 USB slots. Although it's just MIDI not audio, the MIDI routing was all I was after and it's well covered here.

Also liking the build quality and the aesthetic.

    Very happy with it.

Here's how it appears in AUM with a simple setup...

    • This does bring up an AUM feature wish of being able to rename or give an Alias to Ports.

  • Wouldn’t OS-level port naming be something??

Does it work similarly to the iconnectivity midi interfaces (iconnectmidi2+), in that you can plug an iOS device into one of the USB slots and simultaneously a computer into the other USB slot, both at the same time? So that the iOS device and computer can see and communicate with each other too?

Does the iOS device plug in via the USB-A 3.0 ports, or only the USB-B Host port?

I'm afraid it doesn't have the Audio from ios device functionality like the iConnect devices.

You can connect it to the iPad as you can see in the AUM screenshot in my previous post. Although it can't be used at the same time as a PC either as it uses the main USB Host port to connect to iPad. I think this was your main question on it, so nope, afraid not.

Very happy with it's featues and performance as a MIDI hub though.

Can anyone recommend how i could have the m4u (or something else, other other than iconnectivity) hooked up to both my iPad and computer at the same time? I love the idea of having all my Midi gear accessible to both computer and ipad at the same time without having to choose either/or. Is iConnectivity really the only way to do this?
I don't so much care about the Audio PassThru as i can just use the headphone jack output.

Take a look at this thread, https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/46489/usb-connecting-my-midi-controllers-to-two-ipads-at-the-same-time. You could connect two 5-pin MIDI USB adapters back to back to transfer MIDI messages from one device to another. Use Audiobus, AUM, or MIDIFire to route the messages. You'd need to use different MIDI channels for the different sources, since they'll all appear on one port at the other device.
