Squarp Pyramid - Powering from the iPad
Just got me a 2nd hand Pyramid. LOVE it.
I'd read somewhere that the Pyramid can be powered by the iPad when using the CCK adapter with lightning power. So: power into the CCK, USB from the CCK to the Pyramid.
This "works" but the Pyramid randomly reboots every 5-10 minutes or so.
If introduce a powered USB hub into the mix, all works as expected. I'd rather not though.
Wondering if the non-hub scenario works for other Pyramid users? The Pyramid I picked up is from their initial run (the one with the built in accelerometer) so I'm curious if this problem is limited to this model, if I got a dud or if this is just the way it works with the Pyramid/iPad. This is with an iPad 7 fwiw.
Cheers.

Hey Will, congrats on acquiring the Pyramid.
I’ve not used a wired connection to the iPad for a while, but I’ll give it a run tomorrow and report back.
I think you saw this previously, my battery powered Pyramid with BT MIDI. Cool for noodling, but clock can be a little glitchy over BT.
Cheers, Stuart. Yep, I remember that lovely little setup. Currently wondering if the little USB Y adapter that comes with some Arturia gear (like the Beatsteps) to split power and MIDI would also work with the Pyramid. Afraid to try it though! Will research some more.
Does the power adapter have enough milliwatts? I have a few that don’t deliver much power.
Well, there is no power adapter — just a USB cable. Works fine if you plug it directly into any old USB power dongle. Just doesn't seem to work consistently if the power comes from a plugged in CCK.
Oh. Maybe you mean the power adapter for the ipad? Like, perhaps I need to make sure it's using an iPad power adapter vs an iphone adapter? I'm not 100% that I was using the standard iPad adapter when I tried this. Will definitely give that a shot.
Yes, that's what I meant. I have a few iPhone power supplies that only deliver like 1000 mW.
@syrupcore Try to change the lightning cable. They sometimes cause troubles, especially when you need power and data transfer at the same time. I like the idea behind the Lightning connection but the old 30pin connectors were more reliable.
Survey says... Ding ding ding! Looks like this was the ticket. With the default iPad brick I had zero power outs on the Pyramid over about an hour of usage. When I then tested it with the default iPhone mini-brick I realized I could get the pyramid to reboot reliably by hitting 2nd and Load/Save. Over and over again.
Thank you, Mr. Wim!
@syrupcore
Thinking of getting an Arturia Keystep Pro as well as possibly a Squarp. I wonder if it would be overkill though.
Funny - I was just watching a video less than an hour before about making midi controllers using Teensy, and there was a bit about making sure you use a USB charger with more than 1000 mW. That's what made me think of it.
Ah cool. I was just about to ask how you were getting on.
I forgot to bookmark the thread so wasn't getting notifications. Did some testing (with no issues) and it was a nice reminder of how fun the Pyramid & iPad can be. This time round it was sequencing 4 Continuas in AUM.
Cheers for the prompt. Hope you're enjoying yours.
Considering this squarp pyramid to sequnce ios synths within aum. Thinking a hardware sequencer would really help my ios workflow. How has it been working out for everyone?
