Polishing mix with punch? Reference track + examples
Hello!
About a month ago I made a post here with a track that was muddy seeking advice on how to bring clarity and punch to the track
I have spent tons of time this last month reworking the track after following forum contributors‘ suggestions and have arrived at a track I am quite happy with, much much more clarity, overall it is a huge improvement - thank you so much to everyone who had suggestions
BUT when I compare my mix (even post landr) to a lot of commercial tracks, the commercial tacks have a bit more punch to them
I finished this mix 2 weeks ago and mastered it with landr, since then I have tried over 50 different reworked versions where I rework the levels, add selective saturation, using multiband compressors, global saturation, individual element saturation, pretty much everything I can think of, but no matter what I do I cannot seem to get the track as punchy as the tracks I am referencing, my mix is nice, but seems about 15-25% less present/ slightly muddy in comparison
No matter what I do, I cannot seem to add punch without losing clarity/getting some sort of overly compressed feel (I am making adjustments to the pre-landr mix then pumping it back through landr, I have also tried applying adjustments to the landr mix as a 3rd step putting the landr mix through Cubasis master strip, but this results in an overcompressed sound always)
I am uploading here my original mix, as well as what landr does to it ( I am very happy with the landr master but again would like it to have more punch)
I admire the way that the track below is mixed and how punchy the track is, I would like to get my mix to hit as hard so that the bass is very thick and punchy, but the vocals and hammer synth also come through clearly(all of my attempts to improve the punch of the bass have resulted in loss of clarity/presence in the hammer/vocal)- does anyone have any tips for how to achieve this? Is some sort of selective clipping part of the recipe?
