I like how FM can take you to unexpected places. Here, the lead patch in KQ Dixie is fed by complex LFOs in miRack, which are modulating the Algorithm and turning off/on different operators. Drums are Ruismaker FM.

Here's a screenshot with the sequencer parts removed to simplify it a bit. Really, it's not as complicated as it seems once you understand what the matrix is doing. ;)

    This is great!
Lots of power on one screen page and thanks to bogaudio, the FM modules have the important ADSR and feedback knobs.
Still, for learning and understanding I would prefer NFM with its handy FM matrix because it's much easier to see what you're doing and it only shows active routings and modulation amounts.
I always liked how Native Instruments did it in FM7 and NFM works in the same way.

  • Yeh, NFM does look good. I might have to pick that one up some day.

  • Would you guys still recommend NFM or Phasemaker?
If so which one would you pick for flexibility and modern sound?

Or should i stick with Id700 (Ui a bit complicated for me), Frms (sometimes a bit heavy on the Cpu), Mirack (love it for generative or experimental stuff but somehow never get it to work as an normal playable synth lol) or Drambo (But like Mirack i guess it’s bit of hard work to change algorithms)

As always thx in advance :)

First of all, NFM only runs on iPad while Phasemaker works on iPhone too.
I like both. Phasemaker has a nice patch randomizer while NFM is better for sound design.
I find both very user friendly and they're certainly less complicated than ID700.

Another really fun FM synth is Obsidian in Nanostudio 2. Probably my top favorite and NS2 runs on iPhone too.
And Chiangmai in Korg Gadget is also easy and fun, and since it's so efficient it doesn't hurt to layer 10 Chiangmais for getting that monster FM patch 😄

Love obsidian it was my favorite and got dethroned by synthmaster 2. Oh yes i just recently bought gadget and chiangmai was definitely one that stood out from the inbuilt synths ^^
Oh and i forgot the great Aparrilo 2 Op Fm but also fm with another twist( not that it’s bad).

NFM and Phasemaker got my attention because they’re are 6Op and seem to get somewhat close to FM 8. Haha can’t decide between both. Does Phasemaker run well since it seems to get no new updates(last update 2y ago and not listed on Bram Bos site anymore) ?

  • Think I will buy NFM. The matrix seems different to a standard FM matrix. Then kq dixie if its factory patches give good sounds.

Got id700. Aparillo. Phasemaker. Primer. OPL but if I were to buy a synth would likely be NFM rather than a mela upgrade.

Phasemaker runs well. NFM is very good, too. I'd check out videos on YouTube to see if one u.i. appeals to you more than another. Both sound great

KQ Dixie is also worth consideration as it can open DX7 banks and there are thousands of DX7 patches to be found on the web.

re: phasemaker not having had updates....if an app is well-designed with a well-defined feature set and well-implemented it may not need updates. The developer's time is better spent working on new creations.

Thank you, good to know :)
Yes giving the awesome quality of Bram Bos other apps i regulary use, I’m leaning strongly towards Phasemaker. I like the matrix in NFM but Phasemaker has more oscillator waveforms and a randomizer :)
