Magic Death Eye + DDMF 6144 Equalizer or just the Death Eye???

With Black Friday rapidly approaching, I'm compiling my iOS apps wishlist.

Curious for those who have both if the 6144 is still necessary since the death eye (stereo at least) already has a unique equalizer within it:

"This new version has an added EQ section. There are two (boost only) bands with two frequency selections each. The EQ is worked into the Variable Mu tube gain structure. This means it is not before or after the compression section, it is within it! The EQ circuit is inductor based and has wide curves for giving program material that “little something”. There is also a two frequency low cut for tightening up out of control bass. The boost of the bands can be 5dB or 3dB split between 5 steps. I spent a lot of time shaping this EQ mastering everyday and fine tuning the components on the weekends. It sounds absolutely fabulous!"

The 6144 claims to have a lil Neve "secret sauce" within it as well: "It will add that extra shimmer to your sound already when being added to a track flat, without turning any knobs, due to its carefully designed higher harmonic generation algorithm. Now start turning the knobs on any of the five bands and you'll be amazed!"

I'm planning on using these on individual tracks mostly, so perhaps the mono death eye and the 6144?

    I think they’re very different. 6144 is great for making sounds distinct in the stereo field. Get both!

  • DDMF 6144
    Pros:

    • Sounds amazing
    • Great high and low pass filters
    • Each of the five bands have their own bypass switch
    • No analyzer to distract from using your ears
    • If you need more than 5 bands, you can just add more instances to the chain, because it’s not heavy on resources.

    Cons:

    • No m/s control

    Modeled after the Neve portico, which has at least as much pedigree as magic death eye

  • About the "secret sauce":
    It colors the sound just by adding it to the FX chain, even with the bypass switch engaged, so you will have to disable/enable the plugin for A/B testing.

    Keep in mind that the coloring changes completely with the LP/HP filters engaged.
    The original hardware doesn’t have these filters.

  • I tried a series of DDMF apps on a Master Bus and then pulled them out of the line up
    to see which ones weren't adding something to the final mix. They all made a contribution
    to the sound and the mix sounded "less" without anyone of them. 2, 3, 4, ... it just keep getting thinner and less musical.

    I'm so happy I found DDMF when they were all bundled for about $3 each before the Magic Death Eye era when all the new ones cost me $20+. But at that point I just new they were
    really magical models of amazing hardware devices that are legendary studio tools. Without even knowing how to use them well they contribute positively in mastering mixes. But I tend to create massive AUM configs and I don't often have enough CPU/DSP left to use more than Magic Deatheye Stereo, an EQ and a Limiter. So, I'd recommend MDES and you can decide on the type of EQ you need. I prefer FF, ToneBoosters, Blue_Mangoo visual "spectrum" type
    with Hi/Low limits and several bands to tweak to taste.

  • I purchased DDMF No Limits well before the Death Eye was released, and was very impressed with the quality. I have no problem purchasing any of their apps.

    The new Blue_Mangoo offering sounds buy worthy as well.

    It’s really pretty awesome these days to have not just a great app or two In a given market segment, but real competition between serious companies producing products of the highest quality. We are truly blessed.

  • That Neve Portico 5033 costs 1700 dollars / pounds, by the way - really amazing what we can get for a few quid on iOS. It really does sound great.

  • The combination of 6144 + Magic Death Eye gives you outstandingly professional capabilities. I’m still utterly in awe of them - but they work best as a team.

    I'd agree totally with this. I hadn't used the two together before but did that just earlier today and they're a wonderful combo.

    Are you guys using the 6144 to place individual instruments in sonic space, or just over the entire track?

  • 6144 is my go-to EQ on each track/bus/even mastering for everything except for:

    air band (RRS EQ3)

    Pultec (Toneboosters EQ)

    m/s (Toneboosters EQ)

    dynamic (Toneboosters EQ)

  • Yeah, I've been reading a ton of good things about the TB EQ.

    Probably will have to add that one as well...
