Recording midi data in Cubasis 3
Is there something obvious I'm missing when using AUV3 drum machines / sequencers in C3?
Beathawk, EG Pulse and Pure Acid all sync perfectly with Cubasis but when I hit record only Pulse writes it's midi data into its track (and even this somehow sounds different to the original sync's pattern - I probs need to play with quantisation).
Am I missing some setting on Cubasis or Beathawk / PA? Can't figure it out.
What do others do? I've been sending Program change automation from C3 for change PA's drum patterns but this hardly ideal.
Unless this is much easier/reliable than I'm getting, I really can't see the point in these machines... and for reasons I'll never understand Cubasis simply doesn't have a drum machine/grid

Not sure on beathawk or PA but I know pulse has to have ‘midi out’ or ‘midi through’ enabled
Ok thank you.
So I enabled midi output on Beathawk and it did, at least, send some midi data to C3. It was all wrong but at least it sent something. Just been playing with other settings like Through and Midi Select but I don't know what I'm doing...
Surely some kind person out there successfully uses Cubasis with a drum machine app?
I keep thinking it shouldn't be this hard
I've had issues again and again with BeatHawk MIDI in the past, sometimes it worked, sometimes not and I have found no reliable setup that always worked as a MIDI source with other AUv3.
I'm now only using Drambo as a combined drum machine and AUv3 sequencer and it also works well in C3, here's a minimalist example with just a pitched bass drum that will record into the C3 MIDI track as soon as you enable the "MIDI out" in the MIDI output module of the Drambo track.

Drambo is loaded as a normal AUv3 instrument here.
BTW, a number of users have built and uploaded all kinds of wonderful drum machine creations that are mostly ready to go, you'd only have to add the MIDI Output module where you need it (in case you want to record back to cubasis).

Ok thanks RS. Maybe I'll have to give up with Beathawk
which is a shame as I really like it and bought quite a few of the sound packs.
I'm still a bit intimidated by Drambo but only because I haven't given it any time. I'll check out those drum machines you've just linked to. Cheers
All this faffing around just makes me want a better solution built in to Cubasis. Those bloody Classic Machines are just a collection of (very nice) samples.
I so miss Caustic's beatbox
@anickt
As another former Caustic user who's now liking C3 (yeah I'm a stalker!) what do you do? Assuming you make music with drums in it, of course...
Please take your time to check out the stuff on patchstorage. It's in no way comparable to the very simplistic "classic machines", and they're much more advanced than Caustic's Beatbox too.
There's a number of analog 808 style emulations (not samples so they're much more tweakable), even a few physical modelling kits, including one that virtually gives you multiple Impaktor instruments in one Drambo patch ... that's even better than the Korg Wavedrum (if that tells you anything) because you can choose to use your own samples or even process existing drum sounds with additional physical models again.
You've convinced me RS I'll dive into Drambo and patch storage this weekend. Thanks for taking the time to chip in.
My exhaustive YouTubing tells me that folks just use Beathawk as a sound module, PureAcid can't send midi out from its sequencer
and EG Pulse does work... Although I'm having some wierd results...
Good to hear @FPC. Don't hesitate to ask for help if things get too difficult.
Beathawk is still mostly good as a sound module, it's the sequencer part that drove me nuts a few times.
@FPC dont know if it helps but I export the bass midi in standalone mode in Pure Acid and then dump that into Cubasis.... then load up other synths to play with.
Yes, thank you, this does help
it's exactly the workaround I'm going to use. PA is just too good to sit on my iPad unused.
I’d very much like to see a grid-based drum machine in CB3. It’s the main thing missing for me. The project I’m currently working on uses very minimal “drums”, mostly simple kick, hat, snare patterns along with loops I create from a mixture of found sounds/drum loops. So for “drums” piano roll does the job for now. Caustic 🥰
