OT: America and Sweden leading the world in COVID incompetence

No way. We Spaniards are the leaders on incompetence. Our government is a completely joke. A mix of socialists and comunism but really a gang of thieves with an intelect of a mosquto.
India, Russia and Brazil are missing.
Don't know what Sweden's issue is but I know if you are uninsured and don't have a car in America a COVID test can cost up to $300. That's nearly 10% of the country. I get my temp checked everyday at work but I could be an asymptomatic carrier since I am not insured and lack the spare $200 (here in Colorado) for a test thanks to getting laid off due to covid and then re-hired for a $6 per hour pay cut. My industry is screwed for at least 10 years meaning the business that I went to college to work for will not be able to pay me what I have deserved to earn. Yet I still have to pay student loans, absurdly expensive medical bills along with my rent and bills and food.
Rent is still increasing in cities across the country, companies are still continuing the process of automating most of their tasks and people are growing tired. Covid is bad, I understand this, but the impact of it is well beyond the virus itself, healthy hardworking people are suffering as well. I haven't made this little of money in 12 years. Fuck Trump, fuck these statistics, fuck the stimulus, fuck Republicans, fuck democrats, fuck the white house, fuck Russia, fuck China, fuck nations. Hardworking blue collar people the world over are the ones that will suffer COVID not the elite and not fucking politicians.
It isn't "it is what it is" this is only the beginning of widespread civil unrest in the USA. Frankly, it's about damn time.
..Now if only we can get people away from the TV and Amazon and then maybe we can change something proper.
Moved to off topic – please remember to categorise these off topic posts correctly so people can filter them in or out as desired.
So sorry to hear of your situation @sippy_cup.
You're right. repubs and dems don't have your best interests at heart.
For decades I've been registered as no party affiliation, but sadly the only party that seems to give a shit (and be electable) are dems.
Someday (hopefully) there will be a third party that cares about people who went to college and received a degree — and a shitload of debt, and will attempt to create jobs that put that knowledge to work.
Sadly, until then we must all suffer from the indifference of the existing political shitstorm...
Oh please, put this contend in one of the already existing Covid threads.
Corona is all over the internet, and this forum is one of the few places to partially avoid it.
By overall mortality rate, do they mean the number of deaths this year Vs. the number of deaths last year over the same period of time?
Sorry i‘m dutch and find it hard to interpret things like this in another language.
I don’t normally post in these types of threads or read them, but, it is HILARIOUS (read: depressing as fuck) that Sweden had very loose restrictions on purpose, encouraging people to continue their normal lives, while America did not. So yeah, holistically, we done fucked up lol.
Yup, I think there is more value in avoiding it now.
Would be nice to have an ‘everything but off-topic’ filter. Or better yet, everything minus covid. Or a covid thread auto sink? Dammit, why did they shut down Club Penguin?
There is: if you open the categories list you can select ones to follow. Then tap the selector on the top of the main page and choose following.
Oh sweet, thanks!
The list appears to be limited to advanced industrial economies, which excludes those three. Mortality per capita in India and Russia is substantially below the US and Swedish levels in any event, at least when considering the pandemic as a whole.
When Russia releases data (or any other type of "information" I totally believe it!
So does Donnie!
Ha!
I agree. The whole system is really messed up. As I understand it, the electoral college system was a bone the North threw the slave-owning South to keep the union together at a time when they feared disintegration of the union. It should never have lasted this long.
Publicly financed elections, ranked choices voting, and automatic voter registration are how we can reform the electoral system now without resulting to constitutional amendments which kicks open a whole OTHER hornets nest of problems. The right (conservative -> monied, corporatists, radical evangelicals and in some sense the white nationalists) have WANTED and been working towards a constitutional convention so they can CHANGE the rules of the game. They have done the footwork and have several more than a few states already headed down that road. The right has gamed this out. The left has not. We should not attempt it unless we are prepared.
In terms of parties, the real struggle started when money became the object of governing. The right want to control access to who has resources power and money ie them, the left is at least egalitarian and working towards equanimity. The parties are nowhere near the same in terms of corruption, especially during the advent of Trumplestiltskin.
When the people can govern themselves without needing the pockets of corporatists and the trough of lobbyists which feed them with legislation (which theY write) and money which they garner from tax breaks, deregulation etc then... there will be more sanity.
What I have learned over the intervening years, is the greed-is-good-free-market-fixes-everything-corporate-monopolies are no way to run a country or an economy. Smash, grab and fuck consequences is where we are at. We need to fix it.
The U.S.'s politics are certainly messed up -- and more so right now than any time in very recent history. I'd be cautious about people being too supercilious -- as it is likely that no matter what country one comes from there has been odious politics in the not-too-distant past.
It is certainly something that the U.S. has failed to deal with -- and will need to deal with -- the history of slavery and how it has impacted our political, social and economic realities. But if one comes from anywhere in, say, Europe -- there are equally ugly truths -- and history has a way of cycling around.
And while the U.S. is in a bad place, let's not lose sight that in the current world there is lots of bad politics happening. This is not to excuse the U.S., but it sometimes feels that people forget that their own countries have dark histories -- and that what ever current state they are in is subject to change.
Large societies never have an optimal stable state -- there is always a struggle between those who have a self-centered view of society and those with a broader view within any society. Even the most "englightened" countries can turn to darkness in the blink of an eye.
For sure Edward, the UK, and particularly England, has a terrible backstory. My own country (Northern Ireland) has been a victim of that. I was merely responding to the topic at hand, which is the American political system, no superciliousness intended.
The trouble I find as an English person who is also a third generation immigrant (with both Poland and Ireland among other places of origin) is that most of my compatriots know little or nothing of their own history, and it seems the less they know, the harder they beat their chests in the name of the (thankfully expired) empire. And this is even within my own family; I can’t engage them in serious conversation about it, which is both maddening and saddening.
I’m really not sure what’s to be done about it here, it feels too far gone, perhaps by a generation or two - I actually thought as I was growing up that the awareness I had was shared by those around me but it seems that tragically, I was wrong...
Just imagine how many of us in the states feel.
For a few decades we saw small but increasingly positive signs of improved equality for women, minorities, and the disadvantaged. We had our first black president. Then all of a sudden Donnie descended on an escalator and all the evil, disgusting, hateful Americans popped-up out of the woodwork.
It's honestly like a bad Night of the Living Dead remake.
Friends I'd know since childhood suddenly became fully empowered to spew all the hate-filled grievances they'd kept bottled-up inside for decades — knowing full-well that not only was there no one to question their views, but a so-called president was there to fully support their actions.
"Very good people on both sides." 🙄
Nationalism has reered its ugly head in many places in the last few years not just USA. Brazil has a nationalist turd “leading the country”, Boris Johnson another wanker Nationalist hiding under the guise of ‘populism’...and then the millions of followers of these idiots (most of them with the iq of a peanut) are finally coming out from hiding. The Earth is dying and people seem to only want to make our little time left here miserable.
I think we can all agree most of our “world leaders” are mindless puppets controlled by greed, corruption, oldworld viewpoints and complete arrogance. It cannot go on like this.
I disagree. Most of the people I would consider leaders are actually forward thinking enough to know that radical changes need to be made, however they are hampered by the throngs of status quo sycophants who want nothing more than to draw a paycheck and run on “this is what we’ve always done” and the monied interest that backs them up.
Indeed though, It cannot go on like this.
Couldn’t agree more.
The only solution is education, which isn’t great either. I guess the economic hardship caused by hard brexit and pandemic will bring some reckoning and with time hopefully people will be able to put the past behind.
True, Mike
I fear for Brazil. The goverment may be incompetent but people are just too egoist and dumb too.
While the rest of the world is in preparation for the second wave, people here are going to overcrowded bars, restaurants and etc.
Well Trump’s latest fearmongering is to suggest that if Biden is elected he will “listen to scientists” for advice on COVID...
