Squarp Pyramid in 2020?

Even with the advent of Arturia Keystep Pro and Step Bud, etc. is Squarp Pyramid still too o’ the sequencing food chain for iOS in 2020?

As a dedicated hardware sequencer with a small footprint and great features i would say its still a great investment for the price.

  • I haven't found anything with quite the flexibility of the Pyramid. Keystep and step bud don't come close in terms of resolution and duration of patterns (pyramid patterns can be 384 bars long, with 96ppqn).

Maximum number of tracks played at the same time: 64
Maximum number of patterns per track: 32
Maximum number of sequences (group of tracks & patterns): 32
    Maximum number of projects: 256
Maximum number of events (notes, CC, ...) per project: 10000
Maximum number of effects per project: 320
Track length: 1/4 bar (a quarter note) to 384 bars
Track time signature: 1/1 to 24/16 or 1:1 to 24:16
    Recording resolution: 96ppqn
    Tempo: 10.0 to 999.9 BPM

that said, as Drambo sequencing becomes more robust (and midi 2.0 controllers start cropping up), I will certainly consider switching over. As it stands, I still prefer sequencing on the Pyramid since I'm using a hybrid hardward/software setup.

Pppq resolution of 96 is the Pyramid’s weak point . Thanks for those stats!

  • Can Drambo’s sequencer approach it even?

  • Just got one used a week or so ago and I'm loving it hard. Still trying to suss out track patterns and sequences but other than that (and a few weird-to-me button combos) it's very intuitive. And as already noted, very well spec'd.

Wish it had separate USB MIDI and USB Power but not a huge deal.

not as of yet. The main issue for me is that in drambo, patterns are for all instruments, so if you have an 8 bar pattern, all tracks are 8 bars, with a maximum of 16 bars per pattern. You can use the jump step component to have some parts shorter than the rest.. but I still prefer the pyramid style that's more akin to clips where each pattern is independent and can be of any duration. I like having some patterns that are shorter doing polyrhythmic things and then much longer patterns running in tandem.

imo the biggest shortcoming on the Pyramid is the sequencer page. Still feels a bit half-baked and is less intuitive and flexible than the rest of the instrument.

Clips are coming to Drambo which will really open things up, so I don't doubt that Drambo will surpass the pyramid's capabilities at some point.

  • @Palms : Thanks for the great info.
