Going for a "deep dive" into Drum Perfect Pro
This app seems really deep. I've read through the manual and still not understanding some of the concepts (drum stroke probability, linked sets, non-destructive sample editing, etc.). But the drum produces some very realistic sounding drum sounds, so here goes!
Comments
well worth the effort!
To everyone: feel free to share some knowledge on some of the deeper concepts.
Drum stroke probability dictates whether or not the stroke will play. Linked sets just slave a set of strokes to the probability of the first stroke in the set.
Ah, that helps me understand, thank you!
Having trouble figuring out Layers...
The developer @Gilbert is very responsive and may be able to help you personally with specific questions. I was inspired to pay tribute with a Tony Allen style track after his passing and DPP may be the only app with the tools to achieve it, and the dev offered to personally help!
Didn't @Gilbert post a long all-encompassing series of instructional pics a couple months ago?
As I recall, he went into incredibly massive detail in the tutorials.
Hi all, pls let me know if you have any specific questions regarding DPP. It is true that there are a couple of important concepts that need to be clarified and understood in order to bring all the power of this app and create creative drums tracks.
Before reading the manual ( highly recommended ), opening the Quick Start ( find it by a tap on the yellow DPP icon in the menu bar ) will give a more visual way to get familiar with main DPP UI views and features.
thank you, checking the quick start now.
Specific question: can you explain layers? How they function?
From the Quick Start...
Notes 1 and notes 2 layers are two tracks where you can program your strokes, for all instruments. Previously DPP had only 1 track. Notes 2 add a second layer, ( which by the way can be enabled or not in JAM dynamics rules. ) Also each layer can be enabled or disabled for each pattern.
A possibility is to allows to increase the density of strokes ( Notes2 layer ) in normal or loud dynamic levels but mute it in soft level. So, each layer can be enabled/disabled ( excluded ) per pattern, at any dynamic level ( soft, normal, loud ).
Pitch layer can transpose the pitch of an instrument for each stroke ( coarse or fine tuning ).
Pls note also that each of these layers strokes can have a probability value just like any sample stroke. Which can open vast creative possibilities.
A friend has made this very interesting video:
Pls check it.
Thank you, @Gilbert!
If you have all your earlier posts hand, please repost.
They were super helpful at explaining your incredibly deep but hugely rewarding app!
Thank you! That answered my questions
Deep app. Could use a GUI update. It'd be nice if you could do most of the initial creative work on one page, with a layout that utilized the features of a touch device more (i.e. dragging, holding, pinching notes etc ) to effect velocity, probability, timing ... and using icons and symbols instead of all the text in boxes. it's all text in little boxes!!
Exactly how many unique icons and symbols would you recommend?...
I think the GUI works well, I just needed to read the documentation to understand how to select notes and move them around. Also I think a lot can be done on the pattern view, then built upon in the grid, song and mixer views.
Maybe a GUI "style" update would be nice, but wouldn't really add anything to the app functionally. There's so much functionality here, it's really good.
Here are some links to posts with tips about DPP. You might find some interesting workflows to start a safe "deep dive" in it.
Pls let me know if you have more questions and can't find an answer.

@Gilbert thanks for the video and the forum links. Very helpful. Here's another link I found on a forum thread
https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/29783/drum-perfect-pro-newbie-question-fills
@Gilbert Question about probability slider/velocity settings: is there a use case for the other settings A=B, A=0/B=0, A=1/B=1, A=rand/B=rand? I'm thinking I would want to always use A<->B and set the slider where I want it.
Probability determines if a drum stroke is played with velA or velB. Probability = 1 means drum strokes are played with velA, probability = 0 means drum strokes are played with velB (by default velB=0). Probability in-between means a random draw determines the velocity of drum strokes (velA or velB). The A=B, A=0/B=0 etc buttons can be convenient during editing of the pattern in order to quickly set/reset velA and/or velB for the drum strokes in the pattern. That's all.
Got it. That makes sense. Thank you!
