This is lovely - really interesting progression and you're right, that clarinet is terrific. The bass sound, for me, doesn't fit with everything else. Quite an unusual approach with your reverb - sounds like some sounds are very dry, whereas others are pretty wet, which makes the overall track cold... is that a deliberate choice? Not necessarily a bad thing at all, just unexpected. Which DAW did you use?
Thanks @iansainsbury. And thank you for the detailed comment. I gave some thought to what you wrote. You’re absolutely right, the only reverb I added was to the bass track. Most of my choices are intuitive, so, if I’m not hearing a need for reverb I don’t add it... tho, I realize a lot of ears find reverb makes things more natural sounding. For me, clarity is all, and lack of technical skill with fx often makes things worse in my mixes. So I don’t use compression, EQ only when I hear a real conflict, saturation, etc. I rely on there being those things on the presets I choose. I think the iFretless Clarinet has some reverb built in.
I delude myself to thinking it gives my stuff a homemade sound that is a bit different than other folks’ creations. I thought about your saying “cold” sounding. I can see that, tho maybe I would prefer “unadorned”. I have added reverb upon other’s suggestions in the past and will try to remember to try it more in the future. Thanks for listening with a good set of ears!
And I use Cubasis3 for all my stuff. I tried Xequence and Gadget early on, but it feels better to these old eyes to see something that looks like the 70s once did.
Thanks for the response, @LinearLineman. That all makes sense, and you've obviously put a lot of thought into your musical decisions. ‘unadorned' works for me! I think more of an acoustic double bass sound would have worked better to my ears, and an overall send reverb can often glue things together nicely...if that's what you want. I enjoyed the piece.
