What's your favorite MIDI app on iOS?

Mine is TONALY (and Firo4).

Why TONALY? It's super easy to make a song using TONALY. The interface is gorgeous, and I can get quick inspirations from it.

Let's take a look

">

Firo4 allows you to make live loops style songs that can be used in apps like Garageband and Gadget 2. There's a free version called Firo4-CE which allows you to do the same thing (except without IAA support, but you can export the MIDI).

">

But I'm curious to hear your thoughts. What MIDI apps has helped you with your music production?

  • I know it’s almost cliche at this point but....Drambo. The workflow is perfect for what I do and just fits in seamlessly with what I’m doing and it is incredibly easy to midi map on

ChordMaps2. My most used midi app hands down. Pure inspiration.

I really want Scaler 2 for iOS in one package !

  • Drambo vs Mosaic. Depends, they compliment each other by having a very different approach.

  • I don't consider Drambo a midi app (more like a sound/sample generator with midi capabilities).

Purely for midi I think my favourites are SPA and Fugue.

however it is a shame that you can’t copy/paste patterns in advance.
That is a Chuck Norris leg kick to my workflow 🦿💥😫
  • I was hoping someone might mention TONALITY. Been curious about the app, and i’ve been looking into it a bit. Ah well...

    Meme approved!

@SpookyZoo Agreed on all 3. Especially Xequence 2. Haven’t looked into all the features though.

@ltf3 - I’m guessing it’s a guitar MIDI app from the name. Or am I thinking of a different app?
@Poppadocrock - Great choices. Surprised about Beatonal. How did you tame it so that it doesn’t randomly send MIDI to other apps?
@White - Great choices. Been a while. Thanks again for the sneak previews on apps.
@echoopera - I get Drambo, because. Surprised about Modstep. What’s your main use case with modstep? I have the app but i’m looking for how I can effectively use it.
@RolandGarros - Haven’t heard of MidiStep. Very interesting. Thanks for the tip.
@jolico - Yeah, pure Acid is amazing. Actually didn’t know you could use the standalone for MIDI Out. I usually use the AUv3.
@WTK - You know, I was almost going to get Chordmaps 2. I think it was one of the first apps I saw when i was looking into iOS music production.
@Jumpercollins - Yeah, Scaler seems to be one of the more popular MIDI apps, especially for Ableton producers. It’s crazy.
@d4d0ug - Fugue machine. How could I have forgotten it? Got it on sale a few months back but i haven’t looked into it extensively. Have you used iBassist? How does it compare to Rozeta bassline?
@SpartanClownTide - Why choose when you can make your own MIDI app. Approved!!!
@Vlad11 - Yeah, Step Poly Arp is really great. Haven’t used a lot of arpeggiators. Maybe this is a sign...
@Lorichs - Does it allow you to import MIDI as well?

Modstep is a classic Clip based Midi sequencer that i enjoy using with Hardware gear and Synths hosted in AUM.

  • Autony, based on usage

  • edited October 2020

Drambo + StreamByter (for converting to the messages Drambo doesn't support)

  • I'm more of an improv person so...

MiRack - Making crazy cv generators go through S&Hs then through quantisers to midi out

Xynthesizr - My original (random) poly pattern generator

Rozetta - Instant soul/dance/house/soca baseline machine/ transform into Kaytranada

Autony, Rozeta, StepBud and now miRack.

  • easily thumbjam

  • Oh and i enjoy SunVox as well

  • @seonnthaproducer Tonality is a great app and incredibly useful. I use it more for reference than anything because it’s so packed with music theory and the developer is constantly adding new features. I don’t use it all that much however when it comes to actually performing/recording. The chord pads are great but no piano roll or sequencer of any kind or any way to arpeggiate without other apps and it can be a bit lengthy to create chord layouts. It’s still an incredibly useful tool either way.

  • I have been tempted to get Tonality but I've got Suggester which covers a lot of the same ground.

  • iPhone only so fugue maybe for an idea but Xequence all the way for full track with everything automated.

  • I forgot Tonality but would definitely add to my list. I use the auv3 pads a lot.
