syncing aum file player to start time? xequence syncing
Hello!
I am playing back a pre recorded vocal that is about 2 minutes long from the aum file player
aum is linked to xequence 2 via ableton link
When I begin playback in either AUM or xequence, all of the notes in the midi sequence stored in xequence begin playing through AUM immediately- but the file player in aum does not begin immediately, there is a lag on it starting by a beat or a few seconds- it is difficult to tell exactly how long, but at any rate it is out of sync
I have tried replacing the aum file player with multitrack, and the same thing happens
same with enso looper
all of these file playback solutions seem to be delayed compared to the playback start of the midi
How can I make it so that the midi and the audio playback happen all at once at the correct time without one starting later than the other?

@annahahn the only way I know of is to do some trial and error using the Beat Offset for that channel in AUM. It can be very precise.
Many (maybe most) apps start playback one measure after playback starts when using Ableton link.
You could try the Auditor File Player plugin. It comes with Auditor.
@annahahn - there's a setting in the AUM metronome settings called Sync Quantum. If this is enabled, try disabling it. Or, try turning it on and sending the message that triggers the file player some time in the measure before you need it to play.
Also, if the file player is set to Sync=On, try turning that off.
Hi @wim
Thank you so much for this~ I discovered that it does infact have something to do with sync quantum but couldnt't find a way to disable it while ableton link is enabled
everything I have read seems to discourage syncing xequence + aum using standard midi and instead always suggests ableton link~ have you had any experience with the standard midi clock sync? Did it work well?
Is there a way to trigger aum file player via midi? I can only seem to find a way to control the 'play enable' toggle which seems different than an actual play trigger
@annahahn Is there anything wrong or sync issues if you use pulse or DigiStix? I have never had those issues, but I dont think I used a wav file that long. Are you triggering it right at the very beginning??? I can remember triggering the file player via Xequence using the toggle on button. I tried to go back and look at old projects...... but I must have deleted them.
That won't solve the issue. When AUM gets the Ableton Link start command, AUM starts counting down to 0. This ensures tight sync. A lot of apps to this in order to ensure tight sync.
AUM doesn't slave to midi clock, so Link is needed.
Play enable will start and stop playback if AUM's transport is running. The file always resets to the beginning on disable. If that's a problem, then you can use mute/unmute instead, or start/stop the AUM transport.
If I understand correctly, it's not really a problem for AUM's transport itself to pause for the beginning of a measure. Xequence acts the same, so start of the actual transport in each should be synchronized. It's timing of starting file players within AUM that's the issue. So, I think either the file player, Auditor file player, and EG Pulse or DigiStix are all potentially fine.
I'll confess I haven't done any testing though ... leaving that up to @annahahn.
I only encounter this issue when using X2 transport.
Keep in mind too, your latency settings in AUM effect how the result will sound. If I set it to 2048 frames in AUM the result is a total mess.
I’ve resorted to manually setting AUMs tempo when playing with other gear inside or outside the iPad. I do the midi routing master-etc in ab3. I get the lag with ableton link so this is the only way. Start / stop is instantaneous and seems to be the only way for me
