Rhythmic midi filter / gate ~ perforator /pump house for midi?

Are there any auv3s out there that can chop rhythmic holes in a midi stream?

I am looking for something when you could specify to only let the first 1/8th note of a beat pass through, ideally something that allows even more control ie, let through the 1st, 3rd, and 6th 1/8th notes of every bar in an incoming midi stream

  • You could use Drambo to sequence volume CC automation in the MIDI stream. Volume automation is what makes most sense to me.

  • Have you tried Rhythm Bud?

@annahahn I am most curious about this.... why not just use Perforator ? What advantages with just midi? Is it a CPU thing?

@royor ...... what is sad that I looked at that app and realized I already have it. fun stuff you can do with it and I forgot all about it!! Thanks.

  • @onerez Ha! Easy to forget that you have it.. I've been pleasantly surprised myself.. What? I already own it. Since when? 😁
midiFILTr-PG is definitely an under-the-radar app.. there's some power to be had + you can use more than one if you need to.. yup, it's a keeper.. 👍

  • Mosaic, I think.

I seem to remember that you've switched to Xequence for composition and arrangement.

I would suggest trying to use volume automation (CC 7 for most synths).

Add the "Volume (7)" controller for the instrument in question on the MIDI screen, then create a separate sub track (if desired) for the automation, then create an empty clip by using the Draw tool or "INSERT" -> Empty clip. Open it, switch the DATA TYPE to Volume, and create / draw whatever rhythm or pumping effect you'd like.

You can just create a one-bar or even one-beat clip, and then set it to "Loop" in OPTIONS in the arranger -- it'll then "fill" your entire song's length automatically, but the original clip always stays centrally editable (including the ability to time stretch, crop, etc. the original clip to experiment).

The included demo song "Alpha" uses this technique on "Dist" -> "Gate".

  • @royer that's a cool app!

Just in case you don't realise, it would often be impossible to get the same kind of effect as using perforator. For example if you had a slow attack pad sound with a filter sweep, perforator would be cutting holes in that evolving sound. With midi you're sending note on and note off messages, and nothing in between (in regard to triggering the actual sound). So the slow attack and filter sweep of your pad sound would restart with every new midi note you sent.

You might be fully aware of all that but just in case you're not...

    EDIT:

I was looking for something else just now and found this which sounds like it might be useful:

"4) MIDI De-Ghost: Tempo synced trigger block, useful for hardware pad controllers that double-trigger, or removing ghost notes. It can also be used creatively to generate polyrhythms and gate-shifting effects."

    Part of Midi Tools
I'm on my laptop so can't directly access the iOS app store, but if you look for Midi Tools auv3 by Victor Porof you should find it.

  • @SevenSystems I keep forgetting this. Thanks!!!

    Hope you are feeling better!

  • Perforator sends out MIDI, so you could just as well use that?

  • @onerez @SimonSomeone thank you for this!

My goal is not actually to produce a sound similar to perforator, but rather take an incoming stream of midi and use it to trigger vocal one shots that sort of line up with the melody- if I use every melody note to trigger the one shots the mix gets too full too quickly

@royor this is exactly what I was searching for AND with probability genius thank you so much!!

  • @annahahn You’re welcome.. midiGATEs is a cool little app that can transform a midi stream in many ways.. and it’s fun!
I was messing around with ArpBud 2 -> midiGATEs -> synth..
setting ArpBud 2 with random interval, octave + ratchet (using odd amount of steps)..
setting midiGATEs for 5 or 7 steps.. 👍

@royor another thanks for midigates ref. I tend to write overly busy patterns. That thing looks designed to tame that affliction.
