I love Groovebox; I hate Goovebox
Damn you @AmpifyxNovation for making such a great app with so many great sounds, and not letting it play nice with the other boys in their sandboxes.
I’m specifically talking about loading Groovebox into AUM. It is slow to load, fails to load, crashes when loading, or I have issues reloading it into already incorporated projects.
Just so much arggggg! 😡
Comments
Ha. I understand this.
It does sound so great, which is why I still work around the limitations.
Just on the AUM issue, you probably know but just in case. Load up Groovebox first before adding in AUM. If you're loading up an AUM project with Groovebox included you'll likely need to un and reload it.
I know they're keen to improve the app. They're still a small team but always working on their 3 apps.
What's Goovebox?

Ahhhh, gRoovebox. I thought OP was talking about different apps.
Why yes I am, and yes I have... then there’s my latest twiddle in which the damn thing just refuses to load.
Btw The Horizon synth is bomb.
and no song mode!! i make all the great sounding parts but can’t sequence them to go thru the parts to go with other apps ... that’s the biggest draw back to me
Add me on for mode of the song...
Woott can truly enhance the sound of many of the Groovebox synths.
You can jam out a whole arrangement with just 3 sections of 1 bar patterns on drum and bass and recording the output. Just switch it on the fly, see how fast you can do it. You might be surprised. Hell you can have multiple takes of the same song within minutes. It’s built to switch fast and virtually seamlessly. A song mode would just add clutter in my humble opinion. A pan knob wouldn’t though.
that’s really hard to do when you have to have your hands on other apps / synths / mixers. a pattern arranger would barely take up any space, and even if it needed a separate screen, which i don’t see why it would that wouldn’t get in the way you can just ignore it
I love Groovebox, my workflow with it is pretty much coming up with parts ( which are pretty easy with the amazing presets available) maybe a few sections then export it all as an Ableton project , then take it further with Ableton on my Mac and use more synths like Serum if it calls for it, then export stems to ProTools and mix it there. I recently purchased an Akai APC 40 Mk2 and it’s so much more fun using Ableton.
You're both right. Me too. We need some stringing together AND WE NEED PANNING. I thought my long quest was over, but it never really is....
I wish And keep on trying to ask @AmpifyxNovation to add to their apps:
1.multi out
2.midi mappability
I like the ampify apps as they are for one reason. I have too many auv3 plugins already, sometimes I just want something to take me away from the complexity of setting up loads of apps running together.
Groovebox is fun for me to just get lost in and jam away. If I ever get anything useful I just export the project and load the audio files into BlocsWave or logic.
The ampify apps have a level of instant gratification that I don’t get from many other apps and that’s what keeps me coming back. BlocsWave is still one of my favourite iOS apps despite (and because of) its limitations.
Having said all that what could be fun would be a way to trigger the patterns from an external midi source. Either controller or another app. So you could use a simple Auv3 sequencer in AUM to queue up the patterns in groovebox.
BUT if it could do that I’d always end up overcomplicating things and spend too much time setting up and constructing overly complex DAW-less setups rather than just playing.
The fact that I see groovebox er al as closed shops is what I like about them. I’m far too easily distracted and having options taken away is often beneficial.
Obviously that’s just my take. I can fully understand why people want to integrate groovebox into bigger setups; I would too and that would ruin it for me
music=pitch+timbre+rhythm over time.
I love gb for pitch and timbre. Rhythm and time not so much. It’s like a 4 legged stool missing 1.5 legs
Locked into one of many time sigs. No connection between patterns. Pattern lengths locked to multiples of a 4/4 bar. It’s a dance party machine!
I do love it as a music fidget spinner and loop generator as @klownshed described.
Exactly! What is missing the most in "Groovebox: beat and synth studio" is 1) 'song mode' to be able to create a full track and 2) the ability to export a full track.
A long time ago (2019 and 2020) I send feature requests to Ampify Music to add these 2 features. I hope in future updates we will finaly see it. If anyone fell the same please send request as well, this will increase the chances. Here is a link: https://support.ampifymusic.com/hc/en-gb/requests/new
just sent a request and explained why it would be beneficial as well as a request for multi out.
changing patterns is what makes a groovebox a groovebox imo especially for live play
Another request for song mode
Please
Exporting stems works for me. I have done some nice ambient things with GB as well as some harsh beds to be further developed via stems. I find it a great sketch pad 😎👍🏼
It is a great sketch pad and idea generator. It’s part of what I love about it. Exporting is a breeze to be sure, and working with stems is not any more of a problem than any other audio file.
My annoyance comes from stems aren’t flexible as the midi and audio generated in app before export. It’s very easy to change and express the sounds. It be nice if the app worked smoothly while still faffing around with other apps when you still need that flexibility.
