  • Looks like this is based on the Ibanez Tube Screamer TS-808 overdrive unit.

I know their first version of a Tube Screamer (no model mentioned) was received with mixed reviews...

  • It’s good! Really good harmonic content, sustain, and audio quality. Just gave it a good half hour with single coils and was able to get some magic, but also learned what not to do. It definitely functions realistically as a boost and overdrive in front of the amp. This goes without saying but I put it after the amp just to try and that’s definitely a no-no.

This pedal legitimately spikes the input signal of the plugins placed after it. A few times I made a big mistake and had it loaded in AUM in the “screamer” preset, and then loading a Nembrini amp caused ear splitting feedback in my headphones, since the amps “default” to a high gain preset when you open them. So this is word of caution.

I also found that it sounds best when you push the level on the pedal and tame the input/output as needed in the subsequent plugins. That way you get the most tone from the pedal. Lowering the pedal level as a way to manage the overall level in the chain didn’t yield as good a sound. This thing wants to drive the bus!

I played around mostly with the “screamer” preset which is the extreme. I LOVED putting that in front of GS Vintage Clean. GSVC set to Clean American Standard, input and output slightly lowered, reverb set to large, add “screamer” preset in front and holy shit great combo. Rich sustained clean sound that’s broad and thumpy but articulate, full of low harmonic content from the screamer, somehow not that distorted.

It worked really well in front of TH-U. Both clean and distorted Bassman presets blended well, so it can be used to boost clean and already dirty sounds. Turning the TH-U master volume down to -10db is all that was needed for me. The pedal definitely spikes TH-U input meter but keeping the output meter in the green yields great results.

In front of Nembrini cleans it’s really great. And as I said earlier, don’t make the mistake that I made by opening an amp with the 808 overdrive already engaged. The “default” amp opener paired with it will kill your ears.

I’ve never owned a real tube screamer, but the 808 Overdrive Pro is a great addition to iOS.

  • OK now. I think they got it right this time. B)

I was no fan of the previous tube screamer effort (not complaining, it was free). This one is quite satisfying. It’s been a long, long, long time since I played a real TS-808, but this brought back the memories. It has perhaps just a little less of the “honk” I seem to remember from my TS, but that could just be my imagination. Anyway, it sounds good.

I first tried it with no amp to see if the tone was what I remembered. It was pretty close. I then put it in front of a clean Cali Reverb for some instant good results. Rather than switching between an overdrive and clean channel, I often like to just put an overdrive before the amp and turn it on and off as needed. This works well with the Cali.

I was also really surprised how well it meshed with the overdrive channel on the Cali. I would have expected mush, but it sounded great.

It took a bit more tweaking to find a good sound in front of the Sound Master. Output level is important. Too high, and what you’re really hearing is the breakup of the amp, not the TS character. Sometimes that’s a good thing, but I was evaluating the pedal, not the pushing of the amp. I started with just the amp sound, then engaged the pedal and adjusted for about the same level.

One thing I really like is adjusting the gain doesn’t have as radical effect on the output level as with other pedals. I like that you can get away with moderate changes in gain level without having to adjust the output level every time.

All in all, I’d say they did a nice job on this! It’s worth every penny!

  • So good to hear!

You guys always give such precisely detailed reviews that make one feel they are in the room with you.

So glad to learn this Tube Screamer version is a Halloween treat and not a trick...
