What is the best iOS noise gate for guitar?
I'm really loving all the awesome new amp sims we've been blessed with in the past year or so, but despite all these awesome new options, I've been having issues finding a noise gate that effectively cuts the noise without a harsh cutoff point.
I'm guessing what I would like ideally is a gate that has a gentle cut that allows for sustaining notes to fade naturally and perhaps allows a little bit of noise to arise before the cut takes full effect.
Any ideas?

Blue Mangoo's Noise Gate & Downward Expander is absolutely awesome.
This one works great and it's cheap: https://apps.apple.com/en/app/wu-audynamicsprocessor/id1530783413?l=en
+1 Noise Gate & Downward Expander

Check this out.. from around 6:38
Oh wow @royor, what a great video!
Thanks for taking the time to dig that one up!
That is certainly a huge improvement over my existing noise gates.
It would be cool if there were a gate that also included some type of equalizer that would allow the user to boost or cut tones in the gate to more perfectly preserve the original tone as it fades.
@SNystrom That video was right from the developer himself (and the one below).. explained better than anyone else probably could.. for a guitarist, it’s very helpful.. 👍
Here’s another demo on drums.. useful as well..
Nembrini's Audio Rack Noise Gate is free
https://apps.apple.com/app/analog-rack-noise-gate/id1497433620
Yeah, @mojozart, I love virtually all Nembrini products, but their noise gate was actually the reason for my post. Was using it with their Cali Reverb and the noise cutoffs just seemed really harsh no matter how I adjusted it.
Just combine the AUDynamicsProcessor with AUM buses and its on-board EQs and you have more than you've asked for 👍🏼
My go-to is FabFilter Pro-G
Brusfri
IMO, brusfri adds too much latency for live work. Great for cleanup afterwards, though.
I use Brusfri. it works perfectly
See my note above. Brusfri sadly adds latency. Great for cleanup after recording but for live guitar it is problematic to those that are sensitive to latency when playing.
What app(s) work best for you, @espiegel123?
@SNystrom what you want is the Gate Expander, and I will make the following statement fairly confidently, the one from TH-U is perfect. It’s one of my most used pedals atm.
Here’s a good ballpark setting for use with higher gain amps, taken from a TH-U preset. I start with that setting and then adjust accordingly for other amps.
weird , i never noticed any latency with my setup through Aum.
For jamming, the noise gate in Nembrini works ok for me. I sometimes use the expander mentioned above. But if I am recording, I use nothing during recording and use Brusfri to clean up the track after recording.
Also, isolating the source of the noise is often worthwhile. If my iPad is connected to AC the noise/hum is much worse than if I am running on battery.
If hum rather than actual noise is the issue, a decent eq can significantly reduce its level.
Perhaps you are a guitar player who isn’t particularly sensitive to latency. Some people aren’t.
That Gate Expander sounds like it would be very flexible, @JoyceRoadStudios.
Pretty clever to combine a noise gate and expander. I wonder what actual pedal it's based on?
Possibly Boss NS-2....which has a downward expander though that might not be obvious from the ad copy (though it is mentioned in its manual)
I think you’re totally right that it’s a variation on the NS-2, especially since Overloud has been very consistent with the visual design of their Boss pedal emulations. Same knobs and shape across the board, and quite similar in color to the real pedals. What I like especially about the Gate Expander is the attack and release being quite smooth and nearly not as abrupt as a traditional noise gate, so when set just right it sounds quite natural. And it happens to simply be a great noise gate anyway. But as mentioned above, it’s also good to apply this kind of fx after recording, where you can listen to your track and get the noise gate levels just right.
I use Brusfri constantly and never noticed any latency. And I'm someone who can't think straight with the slightest latency
I prefer to work and record on battery for this very reason. With AC and using different hubs and connector adapters, there’s almost always unwanted noise and hum introduced. I’m sure there are hubs with passthrough charging or powered hubs that don’t hum, but I haven’t found any yet. Bus powered with iOS device not charging always seems the quietest. The key for me is having an audio interface that already has all the ins and outs connections I need, so I only plug in one wire into my iPad Pro. Hubs can also introduce latency in my experience, especially when plugging in an audio interface and a midi keyboard into separate usb slots.
This also happens to be built in to GarageBand + Zenbeats.. 👍
Yepp, and if all goes well maybe we'll see it built-in- in AUM as well since the existing AUM effects are already 'wrappers' for the Apple AU's. Twisted wave has this 'built-in' as well. It's very handy for cleaning up and compressing vocals as well (ie. gate out the noise prior to compressing & amplifying the signal etc.
Cheers!
That would be a bonus to have in AUM for sure.. don’t have Twisted Wave but would love to see the Apple AU’s (+ any other AU’s that we own) in Auditor.. hey, we can dream, no? 🤷♂️ 😁
I don't recall much of anything being said on the the forum about Jens Guell and WU products. He seems to have a ton of audio products (over 25). Their user interfaces aren't pretty to look at, but most are relatively inexpensive:
Is the quality pretty solid throughout, or are there just a few must-haves?
Just did a simple test by recording transients direct and through Brusfri. About 3 ms (additional) latency. To me when playing the guitar, it is definitely noticeable. Not everyone is bothered by that amount of additional latency (it is on top of the unavoidable latency of the input buffer) when they play. I am much more sensitive to this when playing guitar than when playing keyboards. I also find the difference between a buffer of 256 and 512 to be irksome.
very true 👍🏻
