  • I’d first like to say that I’m pretty disappointed in the people that offered no feedback along with their post. I’m only going to give feedback to those who did. My apologies if I missed anyone.

    @richardyot I feel like this is a bit brighter than your usual stuff. And I like that you played around with some new sounds and effects. Good stuff as usual.

    @DrRinkel this is fun. The addition of the synths make it stand out a bit from the usual LoFi stuff. I do think they were panned a bit wide and could have been brought more into the middle to fill in the sound a bit more.

    @Janka Ooh I like this. Interesting. Definitely unique. I could see it being used in a dark, artsy kind of movie. Fun exploration of textures.

  • Here’s one of my favorites from my upcoming album.

    If you like it, please take a moment to pre-save the album on Spotify: https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/dukewonder/foundation-2

  • Got a lot of notifications from a previous post so I missed the comments but here we go. Thanks for the post @DukeWonder Wanted to comment all at once at Page 2, else this would be a lengthy post and would prevent others from appearing on the main page.

    Thanks, @richardyot for the feedback on the project . Went a different direction than some of my other entries, so it means a lot.

    1. @Richardyot - Listened to the project initially but I didn’t get the chance to reply. Liked the aesthetic of the song, drum beats, and your vocals suit the mood. It’s definitely a fall jam, and I liked the use of the high resonating solo from the guitar.
    2. @DavidEnglish - Liked the vibe of this project. This was a great listen while reading some articles online. I’m surprised you actually did it on Launchpad. How did you manage to get the song to stop, yet start again? The most impressive part was your use of Transcribe+ to split then mix the song. Nicely done.
    3. @DrRinkel - Short, and sweet. Liking the lo-fi vibes from the performance. Great release.
    4. @Mencey - Yeah, @richardyot was right. The intro painted a sad romantic song, but the vocals and chorus lifted up the mood.
      Ended up giving a feeling of familiarity, and I started singing to the chorus, even though it was a first listen. Great song writing, and mixing. I especially liked the way the chorus was livened with the screaming synth. Hearing the intro again then got the positive vibes. Very interesting... I’m glad you actually quoted the post because I can’t see it again.
    5. @Kitusai - Okay, spectacles on🤓 . Had to listen to it twice. Here’s my breakdown on the song
      a. I liked the driving melody in the background,
      b. Great use of percussions. Really loved the atmosphere they added
      c. Not sure if you played that flamenco style in the back but wow, that painted a great landscape
      d. The lead was great at some points, but sometimes kept clashing with the backing melody. Maybe create a section for the lead to shine.

    Although, that’s my take in the song, great job. Let the winds blow through, Kitusai...

    1. @Janka - Waltz, polka, latin, atmospheric, or modern contemporary? Not sure, but it was an interesting time dissecting the song. Liked the picked guitar, accordian, electric guitar, backing melody (piano/pad). The hi-hats were the parts I wasn’t too sure about. I liked the kick, snare pattern, although interesting choice to use the open/close motion of a hi-hat as a snare.

    2. @Overdosed_Ape Liked the driving drums on this, and the bass line of it. Has a techno feel, which would be great in long drives, or silent chase sequences. The ending had a calm moment of meditation which I liked.
      Maybe add a bit of melodic or bassline variation, past the minute, or shorten it a bit, but overall positive.

    3. @Weareroses - Like the visuals of the song, and the simple arpeggios, with the wub wub. Was this a live session? Also, how’s Drum Computer?

    4. @DukeWonder Thanks for the post. Ohhh...what a fakeout at 1:09. Was expecting a crazy EDM drop with that build, but sometimes silence is great. Great groove. That drum hit hard, and complemented the arpegiator. Did you use a vocoder to get that Daft Punk feel?

  • @seonnthaproducer totally makes sense.

    I like that you played around with multiple instruments that wouldn’t usually go together. It’s a nice tune. I think boosting the kick a bit would help and some of the synths sound a tad off beat. Not sure if that’s intentional or not.

    Also thanks for the feedback on mine. No vocoder, it’s actually a preset I got from either @richardyot, @shinyisshiny, or @Spidericemidas for either Lagrange or Kronecker, don’t remember. I think Lagrange.

    In general, I think Daft Punk does have a pretty solid influence on my stuff. I like keeping it fairly minimal with the focus being more on the interesting sound selections.

    Thanks for the feedback. Yes it was a live session but forgot to screen record and loved the way it came out.
    I love drum computer, quite a bit of a rabbit hole cause you can just do so much. Very great IMO.

    With Launchpad, if you press an already playing sample, that loop will stop at once or at the end of its loop cycle. You can rescind all the playing samples one press at a time (or you could use multiple finger presses), but the recording will still continue -- even if nothing is currently looping. You can then press the sample loops again to restart the music.

  • @richardyot
    I really like the opening, which seems more traditional rock than usual. Good to hear the voice more foreground than with some previous songs. Your most polished production that I’ve heard so far. Excellent mix with every element being clear and well placed.

    @Mencey
    Catchy tune. The voice blends in well with the instruments, but you may want to make the voice a bit more prominent in the mix. Nicely produced. Sounds very professional.

    @Kitusai
    Unusual overlay of echoing musical genres. Seemed a bit disorienting at first. Then I was able to settle in for the ride. It felt like holding several different thoughts in your head at the same time and multitasking the results simultaneously. Very interesting musical journey.

    @Janka
    Moody and atmospheric. Cool changeup at the 23 second mark. Builds well from there, opening up to a more epic perspective. Very nice movements across several genres of music. This one is full of detours and surprises, but never loses its core direction.

    @Overdosed_Ape
    I especially like the contained feel of this one. It’s as though someone started the jam off by tapping on a large tin can, and the music evolved from there. The beat drives it, but the variety of sounds and melodies (peeking in and out) gives it real substance.

    @seonnthaproducer
    Excellent song with effective melodies and instrumentation. The video works well, too. An everyday walk is a good complement to a lo-fi tune. The pacing between the music and video is loosely linked together, which can be a more effective choice than having the sound/visuals tightly synced.

    @Weareroses
    Very good electronic song that seems to glide along the water. I especially like the trill-like flourishes that give the piece a light and airy feel. The video also meshes well with the music.

    @DukeWonder
    Works well to build up from a simple (but interesting) opening. Atmospheric with a strong beat. Very cool electronic meanderings near the end.

    I see. I used to think it would stop the recording so I never attempted that. Thanks for the tip.

    @DukeWonder Excellent points all around. I'll be sure to take the feedback on the next project. Usually, I try not to look back on a project, although I do save a backup of my last project.

    I actually haven't unlocked any of Iceworks synth. What would your recommendation be if I had to pick one. If it helps, my favorite iOS synths are currently Gadget 2, Synthmaster One, and Reason Compact.

    The bass line is excellent, I really like it: it's moody and has a great vibe to it. Bonus points for the intricate relationship between the kick drum and the bass synth too, that's very well done.

    The melodic arps are great as well, and the arrangement evolves nicely as they weave in and out of the track.

    Overall it's a great track, dark, moody and with a nice edge thanks to that bass line.

  • @DavidEnglish Thank you very much. I will do my best to get around to listening to yours later this weekend.

    @seonnthaproducer Lagrange is by far the most flexible. I love it. @richardyot has a fantastic preset pack that highlights the versatility.

    @richardyot Thank you. I’m pretty proud of this one and I’m glad to hear I successfully captured the intended mood.

  • @richardyot Very musical and soft. Silk for the ears! Your singing-kind of melodies style remind me Syd Barrett. The floating guitar at the end is good.

    @DavidEnglish Very strange and taking. I like the sounds and atmosphere the whole being a little bit dissonant which is something I appreciate a lot

    @Mencey This dance is as joyful as it is communicative. Maybe the ending could take benefit of a last chord or something else than a fade out?

    @DrRinkel Great vibe and sounds with a nice melody. Like a kind of postcard from elsewhere.

    @Janka folk electronic techno! Very original and I enjoyed a lot what I heared as an… accordion somewhere? I also feel a melting pot between Spain and Balkans. Cool!

    @Overdosed_Ape I enjoyed the hypnotic dark groove. Maybe too long but when you're hypnotized, you lose track of time, don't you?

    @seonnthaproducer Good chords suite, reminded me a chord progression from Led Zep (in another style). Nice melody, happy mood. Is it an Erhu violin?

    @Weareroses Unfortunately your track has disappeared.

    @DukeWonder Great sounding, very well done.

  • Thanks, @Kitusai . Yeah, it is the Erhu sound in Garageband. All the sounds were sourced in Garageband. Looking forward to your next work.

  • @seonnthaproducer Thank you. The Garageband's Erhu is good. I use also the Embertone's one (on Mac).

    Thank you very much. You are right it indeed is an accordion.

  • @Janka Where it comes from? Is it a "real" or a (real too but) sampled one? Personally I like very much sample works for Kontakt by Ilya Efimov.

  • edited December 2020

    It is an instrument patch from the Yamaha Modx, which has really convincing sounds. It was played by my co-partner. I agree, Kontakt also has really convincing sounds.

  • It seems to be a very nice instrument (just went to see it on Yamaha’s websire)

  • My co-partner is a really good pianist and keyboarder and quite happy with it. It comes with a ton of good sounds. I play guitar more or less okay and just enough keys to realize all my ideas - but I'm much more busy designing and optimizing sounds. For that the Modx has not the most inviting interface, lots of submenus.
