When The Lights Are Low - Indie Rock/Shoegaze

edited November 2020 in Creations

Composed and arranged in GarageBand and featuring the Geoshred/Roli Noise guitar solo I posted last month in the outro. Most of the instruments are GarageBand touch instruments (Drummer, Liverpool Bass, Electric Piano, Alchemy).

Vocal tracking and final mix done in Auria, with MagicDeathEye and Pro R on the vocals and MagicDeathEye Stereo, Reelbus and Pro L2 on the Master.

Lyrics in the spoiler.

Sometimes I feel a shiver
Going right through me
A dark and dirty sliver
of pure dishonesty
If one and one makes two
Where does that leave me and you?

When the lights are low
I see the doubt in your eyes
There’s something I don’t know
Something concealed in your lies
There is no belief
In those words you say to me
Just empty lies, that in the end
Won’t have the outcome you intend

There’s something to consider
In this comedy
Deceit does not deliver
It backfires horribly
If one and one make two
Why is that so hard for you?

When the lights are low
I see the doubt in your eyes
There’s something I don’t know
Something concealed in your lies
There is no belief
In those words you say to me
Just empty lies, that in the end
Won’t have the outcome you intend

  • Excellent! The vocal track and everything all sound nice and polished. Great work!! I’d give you a 10/10 if the ending had faded out rather than sounding like someone walked in and pulled the plug on you.

You’ve also convinced me to buy MDE!

🙏 Thanks for the listen. MDE sounds great on vocals and on the Master IMO, it adds a smidge of warmth and character.

  • Really nice atmosphere, Richard !
You use a major key with a light and ethereal arrangement to which you add fairly dark lyrics. I know that what I am describing is basically categorized as "Shoegaze". But I like this contrast very much. It creates an impression of bitter-sweet nostalgia but with a certain distance. You have several songs in the same vein on your latest album. I really like it, and everytime, I can't help but think about the songs of the really missed Mark Linkous...
But my favorite of yours still remains "On Fire" 😊

BTW, The solo is extremely convincing! I should definitely give GarageBand and Geoshred more attention !

Thanks! The song is in G Mixolydian, I have been using modes in almost all my tracks for the last year or so, mostly Mixolydian, Lydian and Phrygian, because it's a great way to come up with more interesting chord progressions and melodies, and to give an interesting mood to the music.

This is excellent, from the lyrics to the melody to the truly great solo. And I love the ending!

And I don't mean to get over my skis here, but as a production trick I would love to hear just a little bit of chaos or rough edges emerge just once in a while. The song has this great restraint, but under the surface there's real anxiety threatening to break out, and I think you should let it escape once in a while? Like with the line "backfire horribly," maybe you open the filter on the electric piano just a little bit too much?

I think it's a great track, would fit in easily on the bonus disc on Luna's "Penthouse" (if such a thing existed).

  • I like! But I don't believe you recorded it in Garageband as that is a toy of an application and cannot produce such results. ;) Otherwise, excellent.

  • nice track - feeling very early 90's. Loved that outro solo - both the playing and the vibe.

Thanks - that's a great suggestion. The main drawback of doing everything in the box is that it is all too easy to control and the temptation is to fix every little mistake. Playing with live musicians is much more chaotic and also allows more than one set of ideas. I think I should start working some more chaos into these songs.

And of course the Luna reference is on point! 👉

Thank you. I really love GB, those instruments are just awesome. I wouldn't mix in it though.

🙏 I was pretty happy with the way the solo came out.

  • Really nice man, that style is right up my alley...

  • Nice one. The title reminded me of a classic jazz tune -- When Lights Are Low
by Benny Carter -- and also this unknown gem:

I'm not familiar with either of those but I enjoyed listening to them both. I quite like old-school jazz.

Very well done! The end is also well done, well, it came to early - I could have a listen for a few more minutes.👍🏽🧔🏼

  • Nice song again. When I arrived at work I noticed the tune was still going through my head after 1 listen an hour earlier. Also, as a guitarist, getting Geoshred seemed pointless, but that solo sounded great. Very guitaristic, but also slightly not, which I personally liked, though I'm not sure that's a compliment!

I'll take it as a compliment :) And really glad to hear you found the song sticky. I think writing low-key but still catchy songs is super-hard.
