iConnectaudio2+ - is this still a good option?

Hi everyone,

I've decided to use a PC based DAW from now on, and I'm using my iPad as a sound module. In light of that, I'm looking at the best, most latency free way of integrating the PC and iPad together. I've become aware of the iConnectAudio2+ audio unit, and I understand that it can route MIDI/Audio between the two devices.

Questions:

  1. How well does this combo actually work in 2020? I've seen lots of posts/reviews, and there seems to be varying degrees of success with this unit - what are your experiences?
  2. Is there a better alternative?

TIA :)

  • I had the 4+. Obviously very feature rich. My only issue was the editor situation. Both the desktop & iOS editors are a mess IMO. And you absolutely need an editor to set up the unit because of the extensive routing options (which are awesome). There’s really not much out there that caters to iOS as much as iConnectivity does. It’s just not as plug-n-play and smooth as I would hope for, but maybe thats just a consequence of it being so feature packed.

Besides the editor... No complaints. Audio quality was good and once properly set up right, the MIDI worked good.

i use it everyday! one of the best things ive ever purchased for my studio. i send audio and midi back and forth between my ipad and desktop. sometimes i send audio from my desktop Cubase Pro, into AUM with fx chain in ipad, and back into Cubase to record. it’s awesome. I also use midi apps in ipad to play plugin instruments in my desktop Daw.
    i highly recomend.

  • I know of alternatives but not better ones.

I dont know about the 2+ but I love the 'simplicity' of using my iCA4+ but sometimes find it a bit bulky for a portable solution. If I only need midi and two inputs and 2 outputs from my iPad I sometimes use a bluetooth wireless adapter (quicco) for midi and a behringer UCA222 for the audio.

  • Seconded :+1: (similiar application here)
But I‘d rather suggest the iCA4+ ... includes a special charging cable (worth $40) and saves the need for a CCK.
The additional analog channels allow the connection to DAWs without direct software support.
(in my case Pro Tools TDM in MacOS9 and Creamware Scope)

  • @Telefunky csn you compare iConnect4+ which is discontinued, I think and iConnect mio4?

Sorry, I have no experience with their Midi interfaces... and while I pretty much (learned to) dig the audio routing matrix, the midi counterpart is a total riddle to me.
But I skipped the documentation, so blaming myself ;)

I also didn‘t get deep into the sysex documentation of the iCA4+ (a very technical doc), but I assume one could write any custom routing/controller surface with these midi commands.

ps: just checked the site, the iCA4+ indeed isn‘t listed any more, which is a true pity.
It would have been great if they had replaced it by an Adat based unit (practically noise-free bussing).

I would looooove and ADAT input on the ica4!

    Ditto!

  • I’ve had nothing but bad experiences with iconnectivity. Both the 2 and the 4.
The setup/routing software is awful. The device itself was super not stable for me. Ehernet was not very reliable. Also something so proprietary is one day going to be rendered useless when Apple decides to make any changes to iOS.

If you don’t have any external hardware, you’re better off using an actual audio card if you’re just passing audio to and from. Right now i have 3 iPads on a motu via adat and couldn’t be happier. I use them as sound modules and effects processors mostly between the iPads themselves (easier on the cpu and less finger scrolling between a million apps). Midi taken care of via Bluetooth and ableton link (link as much as possible).

(There is no computer in my setup most of the time, but easy to add it in. Mostly only add it in to track into a daw)

Just my 2cents, but I urge people to look at all other options before jumping straight to iconnectivity. It’s a simple and well know solution, but I’ve never seen it be the best solution in the long run.

I’ll add the 2+ does no audio if that’s a deal breaker for you. Just the audio pass through.
IDAM is free if you use OS X, but has its own issues and limited to a stereo pair.
